Highways are safer than other road networks. This is shown in the annual report of Asfa, the badociation of French motorway companies, which Europe 1 was able to consult exclusively. Concessioned highways are five times more secure than other road networks.
In 2017, there were 150 fatal accidents on motorways, for a total of 166 fatalities. Since 2000, the number of deaths on motorways has been halved, "even as kilometers traveled increased by 43%", says the statement of the Asfa.
Drowsiness and fatigue involved . Drowsiness and fatigue remain the number one cause of fatal accidents on highways, especially at night, where the risk of a fatal accident is three times greater. And this concerns all drivers, regardless of their age. One of the other risk factors is inattention, which particularly affects 18-34 year olds. "Inattentive driving is largely related to the use of 'distractors' while driving, namely connected objects (smartphones, tablets, GPS …)," says the Asfa. The under-35s are also responsible for one fatal accident in two related to speed.
Alcohol, drugs and drugs: "disturbing increase". The Asfa also points to a "worrying increase in the factor 'alcohol, drugs, drugs' in accidents, from 15% in 2016 to 25% this year". The vast majority of drivers had more than 1.2 g of alcohol per liter of blood, or the equivalent of five glbades of wine, with, on arrival, a considerable number of deadly menses. All motorway companies, have also made the same observation, it is especially on weekends that these accidents take place. The Asfa also recalls that "not to fasten one's seatbelt multiplies by ten the risk of being killed in the event of an accident."
Finally, in case of breakdown or accident, do not walk on foot the highway: the life of a pedestrian is estimated at 20 minutes.
