After the red, the white, and the rosé, the blue wine arrives in France!

Help, the rosé wine disappears !, claimed already Challenges in an article dating from July 2017. And suddenly, arrived in the heart of the summer 2018 the one that no one expected . The "Vindigo" is neither a red wine, nor a white wine, nor even a rosé, but a blue wine. Heaven !, exclaim the purists among us. But this small revolution marketed in France by a company originally from Sète just three weeks ago is becoming a real phenomenon.

Vindigo is a 100% Chardonnay and 100% natural wine. This is a French grape that has matured under the sun of Andalusia. This indigo blue wine has its roots in Spain, where the process was developed. Its color is indeed obtained thanks to a natural coloring which is on the skin of the red grape and in its pulp: the anthocyanin. During the maceration, when you introduce this skin and pulp, this adds to the wine this almost transparent blue color, without adding any coloring. This tasting 11-degree wine has very fruity notes of pbadion fruit, blackberries and cherries

For the moment marketed by wine merchants and in some breweries between 12 and 18 euros a bottle, the Vindigo has the particularity of not being tasted in simple wine. "It's a very friendly aperitif product, if you replace the aperol with Vindigo, you have a very fruity and refreshing badtail, which can easily replace the spritz", slides to Challenges a partner of René Le Bail, one of the founders of the company. The target audience for this new product that refuses to define itself as "a competitor, but rather as a complement to the rosé" is essentially feminine.

A goal of 35,000 bottles

It all started in a beach lounge in the south of France for our four partners who are between 20 and 50 years old. "We met this wine that we did not really enjoy at the first tasting," says one of the partners. Then, during their research, they were seduced by this Chardonnay, whose coloring was more natural and more fruity. They began developing this product in February, on equity, before officially launching it this summer. "The success was quite dazzling," says a partner while this company in start-up mode is still in the active phase of structuring. Already, large retailers are beginning to call them, and the international has shown interest in this new product, that this company sells 12 euros a bottle.

"We are aiming for a target of 35,000 bottles this summer, then we will launch two new products for September and next spring", announces, delighted , the partner of the start-up who does not suffer from real competition on the French market. Vindigo will, however, need to clarify some legal troubles on the name of the product. In France, it is not (yet) allowed to speak of "blue wine". And society must still silence the reluctance of wine lovers for this unusual product. What she does not hesitate to relativize, trusting: "When we know that the rose took a hundred years to make a place, why not the blue today?"
