Appointment management software, extensions to sort your emails more efficiently, apps designed to connect your email to enterprise software, there are all kinds. There are those coming from Google, and those of third-party developers, ranging from giants – Microsoft for example – to start-ups or even independent developers. All promise to simplify your life, or extract information from the mountain of mails you receive every day.
In fact, the only central flaw of these applications … is that they have access to your mails, all your mails. Where Google has promised to stop using the content of your messages to target its ads, these apps and their developers can scan your email as an open book. So, of course, they do it because you wanted it and validated as soon as they were installed, but trust does not prevent a hint of caution. In a note on his blog, Google says take special care to verify these applications, to validate that they do what they say, and no more. But the master of the game, in the end, is you.
First, a periodical review is needed, to verify that the installed applications are still useful. Gmail will soon be fifteen, you may have been using it for ten years or more, we will not blame you for having forgotten the first contact management application that you wanted to test to improve that of your mail. To do this, go to your account management page, or in the "Login and Security" box, you can find the link to the applications that have access to your account.
Here you will find the ones connected to your account. Gmail, but also all the other parts of your Google Account, Android games that connect to Google Play, all apps that want to save photos or documents in Google Drive. Take the test, you will probably be surprised to find things you had forgotten about. In doing the test, we found for example Picasa, the old Google management and photo editing app … which has not existed for two years. If you do not recognize an app or if you no longer use it, click on its name to see the details of its access rights, and if in doubt, no mercy, click on "Remove access".
