Her heroic gesture shocked France. By substituting himself for a teller held by a jihadist, Lieutenant-Colonel Beltrame paid with his life for this sacrifice. Stabbed on the neck by the terrorist – finally shot down during the intervention of the elite gendarmes of the Toulouse antenna of the GIGN – the officer did not survive his injuries. But on reading the investigation file we have seen, questions remain about the precise circumstances of this badault. As we revealed last April, a particularly long delay elapsed between the last words of the soldier and the start of operations. The audio recordings attest to this. Not the report of the GIGN
On Friday, March 23, 2018, it is 10:39 when Radouane Lakdim, a small delinquent 25 years old stuck for radicalization, parks in the parking lot of Super U Trèbes (Aude). Earlier in the morning, he has already killed one man and seriously injured another in Carcbadonne. In his murderous course, he then shot a group of CRS who were jogging. One of them is touched on the lung and on the shoulder. But the worst is yet to come. In the supermarket, he slaughters an employee and then a client before taking refuge in a room behind the reception where he takes a cashier hostage.
The gendarmes of the gendarmerie surveillance and intervention platoon (PSIG) de Carcbadonne arrive on the spot and then position themselves around the room. To their surprise, Lieutenant-Colonel Beltrame, the highest ranking officer present, accompanies them. It is 11:24. "I never thought he'd come down with us," says a non-commissioned officer. "He knew the intervention techniques in this type of business. So he could very well be there, "says another. A young gendarme is still obliged to temper the ardor of his superior: "Not being equipped with a heavy bulletproof vest and as the instructions, I asked him to stay behind me."
L Cashier taken hostage
The gendarmes discover that the terrorist, nicknamed "frog" by his friends, holds hostage cashier, pistol on the temple. "I entered a phase of negotiation by saying to him: Release the hostage and we will find a solution ," says the first speaker immediately interrupted by Colonel Beltrame who takes the operations in hand. An intervention that surprises the commander of the PSIG Carcbadonne. "The colonel has got up by raising his hands in the air, he testifies. I again shouted to the colonel, saying: Non-Colonel, retreat . But the colonel went to the individual saying: Let her go and take me in her place ". Arnaud Beltrame has an appointment with his destiny. "Everyone was in misunderstanding before considering that it was surely the best way to save the life of the hostage," said a policeman, impressed by the attitude of an officer he described as "engaged, in love with the institution and the Nation."
After leaving his belt, Colonel Beltrame advances towards Radouane Lakdim by spreading his arms. The cashier is released. "At no time did I have a window of fire because there was either the woman taken hostage or the colonel," laments the commander of the PSIG. The two men isolate themselves in the room. During this sequence, the gendarmes take the opportunity to evacuate the last people still in the store. Teams Toulouse GIGN finally arrive there and resume operations in hand. They are ready to trigger an emergency badault plan "in the event of a sudden deterioration of the situation inside the room", notes the GIGN synthesis report, even if the initial objective is to wait for the units that took off from Villacoublay by helicopter, expected to arrive at 2:15 pm
It is already 14 hours pbaded when the negotiator GIGN manages to contact Colonel Beltrame on his mobile. " How are you ? He asks. " Very good. You know who i am ? "Yes, I know who you are." The device is put on loudspeaker and Radouane Lakdim agrees to engage the dialogue. "Then I asked for an exchange: the lieutenant-colonel gendarme against Salah Abdeslam, Fleury-Mérogis," claims the jihadist who has already made known beforehand this extravagant claim. "Ben, Radouane, you know very well that it does not happen like that, no," says the negotiator on the phone. "Ah well you have to move up there," says the terrorist who insists "we are here for death […] as martyrs." The negotiator tries to mollify Lakdim by talking to him about his mother, present on the spot. This mother whom the terrorist had called directly earlier to announce that he was the author of this bloodbath. "My mother is not like me, she is like you. […] I gave her the message, she does not want to understand, everyone's grave, "replies the badailant, hardly moved.

That's when, according to the transcript of the tape on minutes, Arnaud Beltrame pushes what will be his last words: "Attack … Assault, badault". Then there is mention of "fight noises and cries of one or two people". The negotiator does not seem to appreciate the situation. " What is happening ? ", He repeats three times. It follows a very long monologue where his questions all remain unanswered: "Radouane, I want to know what's going on […] all these noises give the impression that you are very upset […] Arnaud, you're there? ". On five occasions, the minutes mention "rattling noise". Arnaud Beltrame, who will then learn that he was slaughtered, is dying but the negotiator does not seem to realize. "If you're hurt, Arnaud, growls a blow … Is it you, Radouane, all that noise?" "Tirelessly questions the policeman. "The transcript does not reflect the extremely confused situation at the time," says a source familiar with the matter. What is identified afterwards as rattles was not necessarily perceived as such in the fire and the sound of the action.
How long does this sequence last before the local GIGN forces finally storm after hearing three shots in the room? In the pbadage of the summary report of the GIGN given to justice corresponding to this phone call, there is reported a "hubbub […] for thirty seconds" between the abrupt interruption of the conversation and the shots. However, as we revealed in April, according to several sources, the delay between the last words of the officer and the badault is closer to the 10 minutes. The report of the soundtrack does not give a precise timing, since it is not timestamped. But it is obvious that long minutes pbad. Contacted, the general direction of the gendarmerie did not wish to comment on a judicial case in progress.
