Autumn brings with it its procession of rare insects. After the "diabolical bugs", observed in Paris, in the suburbs and in several departments, American bugs were detected on the side of Beaujolais according to Le Progrès.
This insect from North America, measuring up to two centimeters and brown-red, has been seen by many inhabitants of Loire and Saone-et-Loire. "There are everywhere, in Cercié, Lantignié, Regnié-Durette … We have a lot," testified one of them.
They attack conifers
Detected in France for the first time in 2005 – it was in Corsica – the American bug called "pin" is perfectly harmless for humans and animals: it does not bite and no disease carrier, unlike the ferocious bedbugs of bed. From September to November, these bugs with long legs and antennas are looking for shelter to cross the winter and sometimes rush into homes.
Nevertheless, the so-called Leptoglossus occidentalis can have a negative impact on its natural environment, especially conifers. "It feeds on the seeds in the cones, pricking its rostrum to suck the lipid and protein reserves," explained in 2009 a review of National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA).
Warning however to those who would like to get rid of it. It is quite possible to eject them by hand or via a vacuum cleaner. Only, warns the INRA, "as for many other bugs, its brutal derangement causes the emission of a nauseating odor …".
