Black Friday: The Huawei Mate 20 Pro's Photos Compared to the Sector's Cadors

CONSO – Between Christmas, which is just around the corner and, a month ago, the big promotions of Black Friday, we can be tempted to take advantage of it to change the smartphone. Builders have understood, they have almost all released new phones at the end of the year. And it seems that the focus for high-end models, this year is still on the quality of photos.

After Apple's iPhone XS and Google Pixel 3, Huawei unveiled its Mate 20 Pro, released on November 3rd. The three phones are expensive (more than 850 euros) and obviously benefit from the latest innovations, a very neat design and the best components currently on the market.

All with, therefore, cameras and a state-of-the-art image processing. The Huawei mate 20 pro goes even further by offering not two, but three lenses on the back of the smartphone. A clbadic, a telephoto lens allowing a 3x zoom and a wide angle (zoom 0.6x).

What's enough to scare Google and Apple? Huawei is not at all an outsider in this area. In the independent reference ranking dxomark, the best smartphone in photo is currently the Huawei P20 Pro, in front of the iPhone XS Max (the Pixel 3 has not been tested yet).

The HuffPost did the test and compared the Huawei Mate 20 pro with a Google Pixel 3 XL and iPhone XS Max. These photos were all taken at the same times and under the same conditions.

By day, the differences are not obvious, especially between Pixel 3 and Mate 20 Pro.

The iPhone XS stands out with brighter colors. Note that the iPhone XR, the version "low cost" which has only one lens in the back, makes similar pictures to his big brother XS.

On the other hand, the Mate 20 pro has advantages. First, it has, like the Apple smartphone, a telephoto lens. This one allows a zoom x3, against only x2 for the iPhone. Huawei also offers a wide angle. Here is the result, taking the picture from the same position:

At night, the main camera of the Huawei Mate 20 pro is very effective for landscape views, while the Pixel 3 is pretty good in this area.

The difference is even more noticeable in the face of the iPhone.

On the other hand, the two other objectives of the Mate 20 pro do not seem well adapted to shots without too much brightness. There is a lot of grain for one and not enough light for the other.

For medium-range photos in the city, the Pixel 3 gets back on track.

The iPhone XS offers a darker picture, but also closer to what our eyes see in the same circumstances.

In a room lit with artificial light, the Mate 20 Pro is brighter, but less respectful of the original (green) color of the background.

The contrast with the iPhone is even more striking (the picture taken by the Apple smartphone is closest to the true color of the background).

Here, Huawei's smartphone offers a photo so bright that one wonders if it was really taken at night.

The difference is less noticeable between the zoom of the iPhone and the Mate 20 pro, but the latter remains a little brighter. And the zoom is obviously more important.

Day portrait mode

Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs Pixel 3

If the portrait mode of Pixel 3 and iPhone XS are similar (despite the lack of a second goal for the smartphone of Google), Huawei has chosen a wider frame.

At night, portrait mode does not work very well in all cases …

… and it's even worse for the iPhone.

In conclusion, difficult to discern a big winner. If the iPhone XS works very well with enough light, the photos are quite dull (but close to reality) in the dark.

In contrast, the Mate 20 Pro and Pixel 3 are able to sublimate the night photos, with a small advantage for Huawei, although things may change depending on the frame.

In any case, the presence of two additional goals is a plus. Too bad they can not work as well as the main when the sun is down.
