Saint-Ouen – Deliveroo, which delivers home-made dishes from neighborhood restaurants, has opened shared kitchens in Saint-Ouen, near Paris, allowing restaurateurs to test a new market, a concept that it declines around the world.
Founded in London in 2013, the British start-up, which employs 35,000 bicycle couriers in 12 countries, thinks big: having opened 74 of these sites called " Editions " in the world, There will be 250 by December, including several in France, its second largest market after the United Kingdom – on which it does not yet communicate.
" We want to help our partner restaurants to develop their business and bring a new catering offer to our customers ," says his co-founder Will Shu, in an interview with AFP.
" Vietnamese cuisine, pizzas, salads … we propose in a district that lacks restaurants, a varied offer, that the inhabitants should appreciate " – a request estimated by Deliveroo via the badysis of its data.
In the twelve converted kitchens in this former warehouse – eight of which are occupied – Blend's upscale burgers, Petit Cambodge bo buns, Tripletta's Neapolitan pizzas and Santosha's Indonesian street food mix side by side.
Born in 2011, Blend, who already serves a thousand burgers every day from five addresses in Paris, has recruited 4 people and is counting on 40 orders a day for this location to be profitable.
" It was not a priority for us to open a restaurant here, but this place allows us to test the market, it's tailor-made ," says its founder Victor Garnier .
For restaurant owners, the initial investment may be zero but the commission (confidential) levied by Deliveroo on the turnover will be higher. A second formula provides for a lower commission, with a down payment.
– Charter to come –
" I hope to develop my activity without changing the quality or the remuneration of the staff, the question is to reach this balance. sharing the margin "says Simon October, manager of Petit Cambodge, a restaurant in the Xth arrondissement of Paris mourned by the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015.
His two restaurants achieve 20 to 25% of their figure business via Deliveroo, without which " we would not touch some customers, because the market has changed: delivery has become unavoidable ".
At the door of " Editions ", succeed the couriers-called " riders " at Deliveroo who charges 2.50 euros delivery- in their multicolored shirt.
Sentenced in early June by the Spanish judiciary, who ordered the reinstatement of a returned driver, considering him bound by a " employment relationship " to Deliveroo, the platform would like to see recognized the status of " self-employed " of his bicycle couriers. Its 9,300 deliverers in France are self-employed, are paid for the race and provide their bike.
In August 2017, some had protested in Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes and Lyon to oppose a general payment of the race and claim a better remuneration.
In the process of adoption in parliament, the bill " professional future " should encourage platforms such as Deliveroo or Uber to adopt a " charter " for social protection of their workers, while avoiding their requalification in wage labor.
" I hope this will clarify the situation ," says Shu. " We work with nearly 10,000 + riders + in France, and the reason they opted for this job is mostly flexibility ".
" They work 12 to 14 hours a week, earn 16 euros an hour on average and most of them do not want to work full time ," he says.
" If there was to be a requalification, that would end the flexibility and that's not what these people want ," insists Mr. Shu, who plans to invest 100 million euros in France.
