Take the design of a OnePlus 6T, add color, ultra fast charging and a better camera, and you get the Oppo RX17 Pro. Just introduced in Milan, the device of the Chinese brand (which belongs to the same group as OnePlus) will be marketed from November 16 in France. The 01net.com lab received it last week and reveals the results of its first tests.
Same design and screen as the OnePlus 6T
Historically, OnePlus smartphones have always shared a similar design with those of Oppo. The reason is quite simple, the two companies share some departments including production chains. They therefore share some of the components.
Aesthetically, the Oppo RX17 Pro is, unsurprisingly, almost identical to a OnePlus 6T. Same notch in drop of water, same OLED screen of 6.41 inches, same back in glbad … Only the colors differ, and this time more inspired by the offer of Huawei in the matter. Smartphones also share the same fingerprint sensor under the screen and their facial recognition very fast.
The RX17 Pro has one advantage, however, it accepts microSD cards. We can go beyond the 128 GB of internal storage of the device.
According to the first measurements of 01net.com's laboratory, the screen of the RX17 Pro is strictly identical to that of the OnePlus 6T. We measured a maximum brightness of 449 cd / m2 against 452 cd / m2 for the OnePlus smartphone. Again, it's worse than a lot of high-end devices (which revolve around 600 cd / m2). This may disturb the screen when used in direct sunlight. In most cases, this is still satisfactory.
The first Snapdragon 710 with joysticks
If in appearance, the Oppo RX17 Pro is identical to the OnePlus 6T, it is a little less well off technically. It does not ship the powerful 6T Snapdragon 845 processor, but Snapdragon 710, the latest generation of Qualcomm's midrange SoC. The performances are therefore less good but remain quite honorable. We did not experience any latency when we first took control. Note that 6 GB of RAM accompany this processor.
Excellent autonomy
The Oppo RX17 Pro has two 1850 mAh batteries, for a total capacity of 3700 mAh. A technical choice necessary for the proper functioning of the ultra-fast recharge (mentioned later).
According to our first measurements, the RX17 Pro delivers an excellent versatile autonomy of … 1:45 p.m.. It's not as good as our two champions of the moment (the OnePlus 6T and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro) but it's perfect to hold the whole day without recharging your device.
From 0 to 100% in … 37 minutes
Like the Oppo Find X, the RX17 Pro has the amazing technology of ultra fast charging SuperVOOC. Thanks to this, the RX17 Pro can be recharged from 0 to 100% in … 37 minutes according to our own measurements. To recover 50%, it takes less than 15 minutes. Ultra effective.
Triple variable aperture camera module
It's on the camera that the RX17 Pro sets to differentiate itself. It has a triple camera module with the particularity of the possibility to alternate between two openings, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9. Its main camera (12 Mpix) can switch from an aperture f / 1.5 to an aperture f / 2.4, which allows to bring more light at night. We have not yet highlighted the benefits of this equipment, we will do it soon in a comprehensive test.
The second sensor (20 Mpix) allows him to offer a portrait mode with bokeh effect while the third is useless. At least for now. It is not a camera but a TOF sensor that will be used to model objects in 3D, and to measure the distance between a subject and the camera. It will only be activated in a future software update according to Oppo. Too bad, we would have liked to see what it gives.
More expensive than the OnePlus 6T
With its RX17 Pro, Oppo offers a device with the same design as the OnePlus 6T but with a triple camera module supposed to perform in low light and portrait mode, ultra-fast charging and a microSD port. What make it more interesting? Recall that this smartphone is less powerful and it does not run under OxygenOS but under ColorOS, an overlay far removed from the pure Android and still displays many errors in translation.
His price ? 599 euros, or 40 euros more than the OnePlus 6T base also delivered in 6 GB / 128 GB. The smartphone will have the advantage, according to Oppo, to be offered among operators through subsidized offers, but is this enough to justify not taking a OnePlus? Not sure.
