Announced a few days ago, the Mi A2 and its little brother the Mi A2 Lite were unveiled by Xiaomi in Madrid. Two Android One smartphones that will join the French show on July 27th.
After only a few months in Spain, Xiaomi has already made its way into the top three smartphone sellers in the country. It is therefore logically in this capital of the brand in Europe, and more precisely in Madrid, that the manufacturer has decided to launch the world launch of its new terminals, Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. Two smartphones announced just a few days ago, which will run on Android One. Unsurprisingly, the Mi A2 is a kind of international version of the Mi 6X. It is the fourth phone of the brand to join the displays of the Mi Store Paris, where it will be available from Friday, July 27. Its release will be accompanied by that of the Mi A2 Lite, light version on the photo module and performance, but catching up on the battery. On the occasion of the Madrid event, we had the opportunity to get our hands on this famous Mi A2. Here are our first impressions.
A double half-tone photo module
The Mi A2 boasts eye-pleasing finishes. Its aluminum shell is the most beautiful effect, however, it carries very easily and quickly fingerprints. Its double dorsal photo module is housed in a small outgrowth. It feels to the touch and leans slightly the terminal once lying down. In addition to this minor aesthetic flaw, the Mi A2 offers a quality grip. Thus, its side buttons are easily accessible. The fingerprint reader at the back also falls directly under the finger. As on the Mi A1, the lower edge of the terminal hosts a USB-C output, however, this is done to the detriment of the mini-jack output 3.5 mm.
For this Mi A2, Xiaomi put the package on the picture. The back of the smartphone is thus equipped with a double photo module. The main module is equipped with a 12 megapixel sensor accompanied by a lens opening at f / 1.75. The secondary module uses a sensor of 20 megapixels also badisted by a lens opening at f / 1.75. It may seem surprising to have a main sensor with a lower resolution, but Xiaomi succeeds a little technical pirouette. In fact, the module with a 20-megapixel sensor uses technology "4-in-1 Super Pixels". This means that the software merges four photosites (or pixels) into one. The goal behind this approach is to capture the maximum of light per pixel. However, this divides by four the amount of detail, and therefore equates to a 5 megapixel sensor. Finally, the whole gives a necessarily bright result, but where the contrasts are exaggerated and the final rendering a little dull.
] Selfies too smoothed
At the front, the Mi A2 offers a simple module with a 20 megapixel sensor, also in "4-in-1 Super Pixels", badociated with a lens opening at f / 1.7, which serves as a selfie machine. Note that a flash is present on the front, to allow self-portraits in low light. A portrait mode is also available on both smartphones. It uses image processing software to create bokeh (background blur) around the people being photographed. A successful effect. However, the final shot is far too smooth to be realistic. And this, even with the beauty mode off.
The Mi A2 from 269 €
In terms of characteristics, it is therefore a phone close to Mi 6X that Xiaomi offers us. The smartphone is equipped with an IPS 5.99-inch 18: 9 aspect ratio display in FHD + (2160 x 1080 pixels) and a quality resolution (403 dpi). To the naked eye, this screen seems to suggest a colorimetry that may be too cold. On the performance side, it's a Snapdragon 660 chip with 6 GB of RAM that drives the terminal. What to run quietly Android One, the "pure" version of the OS, offering regular updates. Finally, the smartphone has a 3000 mAh battery to keep it awake.
The aluminum backbone of the Mi A2 and his fingerprints

The Mi A2 Lite with 19: 9 and a powerful battery
For its part, the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite is really like a Mi A1,5. He also offers less convincing finishes than his big brother. Thick, it has a plastic shell and giving an entry-level appearance to the smartphone. The 5.84-inch IPS panel at 19: 9 ratio displays in FHD + (1,080 x 2,280 px) and offers a rather good resolution (432 ppi).
The Mi A2 Lite with its slab 19 : 9 and notch.
As the first smartphone in the range, the Mi A2 Lite runs with a SoC Snapdragon 625 and 4 GB of RAM. Enough to offer a smooth Android experience, but also a good autonomy since a battery of 4000 mAh is housed in the terminal. Xiaomi thus promises two days of use without going through the charger box. On its back, a double photo module (12 + 5) is present while the facade hosts a simple module with a sensor of 5 megapixels and a lens opening at f / 2.0.
Finally, if it will also available in France from July 27, this Mi A2 Lite has two versions. A first with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage at € 189 and the second with the combo 4 GB / 64 GB will be available at € 229.90.
