Over the last six months, the French market for new cars has increased by 4.73% to 1.43 million registered vehicles.
The French new car market is doing well. Very well even. In June, light vehicle registrations jumped 8.3%, the best growth since the beginning of the year. Over six months, the performance remains remarkable, with a rise of 4.73% to 1.43 million vehicles. The automotive market is continuing its recovery, since the rise has started since 2014.
French groups take advantage of this positive context to grab market share. The PSA group posted very strong growth in the first half, with a 16.51% increase in its registrations, but this is largely due to the integration of Opel. Without this element, the growth of the manufacturer of Sochaux remains appreciable, at + 5.9%. Among the PSA brands, Citroën is up slightly, + 2.9%, Peugeot is more dynamic, + 7.1%, and DS rebounds – finally – strongly, to + 19.4%. The premium brand takes advantage of the launch of its DS7 Crossback, the first real novelty since 2011. A second is expected for the end of the year.
The Renault group posted an increase very close to that of its French rival, + 5.77%. The dynamism comes mainly from the low-cost brand Dacia (+ 20.3%), which benefits from the renewal of the Duster, rather than Renault (+ 2.5%).
On the side of foreign manufacturers, the Volkswagen group is growing (+ 1.96%), but less than the market. Skoda (+ 22%) and Seat (+ 18.6%) are in good shape, while Audi suffers (-13.4%). Ford (-2.61%), BMW (-0.34%) and, especially, Nissan (-15%) are down. Some, however, are doing well. This is the case for Toyota (+ 6.7%) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), which saw its registrations soar by 14.3%, supported by the excellent performance of Jeep (+ 39%).
