Highways: towards a toll price explosion?

At the beginning of 2019, motorists should see the toll rates of French motorways increase, in particular because of a vast program of works.

Decidedly, it seems that French motorists are cursed. After the announced increase in fuel prices at the beginning of 2019, which has already given rise to a movement of discontent among the population, here the tariffs of motorway tolls will also increase more than usual from the month next February.

According to information reported by the Journal du Dimanche, the level of traditional increases, whose purpose is to pbad on inflation, is not yet known. But each concessionaire will have the possibility of applying a surcharge of +0,146% and +0,22% and this between 2019 and 2021. Increments to the load of the users who must be used to finance a plan of investment highway whose amount work amounts to about 700 million euros, says the JDD.

The latest amendments to the motorway concession contracts, which mention increases related to this investment plan, were published in the Official Journal on 7 November. Several companies are concerned, among others, APRR, Area but also ASF and Escota, owned by the Vinci group. The latter, in the company of another of its subsidiaries, Cofiroute, intends to invest "381 million euros of work including 150 funded by local authorities," said a group leader at the weekly.

This work plan has been waiting for some time now. It was launched by François Hollande at the end of his term, but was rejected by the Arafer, the regulator of highways. Also, after the arrival of Emmanuel Macron in power, the new government reviewed the project to save a large part.
