The Lactalis plant in Craon (Mayenne), at the heart of the salmonella-contaminated infant milk business at the end of 2017, will resume its production of infant milk powders, but "without marketing at the moment", said Wednesday the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

"The prefect of Mayenne, in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, agreed to the gradual resumption of activities packaging and drying powders of infant milk, "said the ministry in a statement.

This resumption of production is "without marketing at the moment and under the control of the inspection services," said AFP Fany Molin, spokesman for the Directorate General of Food (DGAL), dependent on the Ministry of Agriculture.

"The prefect takes his decree today and re-authorizes the use of the drying tower number 2 and packaging lines" to produce infant milk powder, a-t she added.

The prefect matches this reopening of a number of conditions, according to Ms. Molin, who cites the instructions for all production, but also the implementation of a strengthened monitoring plan, badysis on all the products which are manufactured, the obligation of transmission to the DDPP (departmental direction of protection of the populations) of all the results of self-checks.

The drying tower number 1 of the site, which had been contaminated by salmonella, is for its part permanently closed

"Today there was work. What was important was that the N.1 tower was stopped. Given the fact that we have a single drying tower on the Craon site, we have put in place a flow of materials and a lot of work has been done in this context. We also reviewed the entire sanitary control plan with the authorities, "said Michel Nalet, Lactalis' director of communication, AFP

" There has not been any technical unemployment in a while. We waited impatiently for the authorization so that the employees of the factory can work again as before early December, "added Mr. Nallet.

The Ministry said that the restart of the activity will be framed by a specific prefectural decree and a suitable surveillance protocol will be implemented

"Infant products manufactured and packaged will be kept for a period of reinforced controls to obtain all the health guarantees required for their placing on the market," adds the ministry. 19659003] "We now have the necessary checks on the approval file, on the sanitary control plan, on the facilities of the plant. All this is consistent and must be able to control the risk, however we must see in operation, to also be able to take a number of samples in the production environment, to verify that there will be no recontamination, for take samples from the products that will be manufactured, "says Ms. Molin.

Regarding adult milk powders manufactured since the restart of the plant in late May, the prefect of Mayenne authorized their marketing, indicates the department

At the end of 2017, 36 infants had salmonellosis after drinking an infant milk from Picot and Milumel produced at its plant in Craon, Mayenne. The causes of the disease of two other infants are still sought. 19659003] 04/07/2018 13:34:40 –
