let's stop bad faith, if Apple had created it we would shout to the genius

The Oppo Find X caused a sensation during its presentation at the Louvre Pyramid. Yet, after the first grips, criticism and concern grew around the product and the brand. I attended the launch of the product, I took it in hand, and for me these criticisms are only bad faith. If Apple had launched such a product, everyone would have shouted genius.

June 2018. Oppo made his big comeback on the Old Continent during a noticed event. The brand privatized the Louvre and invited all the gratin of journalists, bloggers and Youtubeurs from all over Europe. To mark the occasion, Oppo presented a surprising product: the Find X. More borderless than ever, the smartphone incorporates a technology unique in the world: a retractable photo module hidden under the screen that triggers when the user unlocks the smartphone or activate the camera. Entirely mechanical, this technology is a real technical feat.

Proposed at 1000 euros, the product certainly will not sell in mbad. But he demonstrates the technological know-how of the brand. Oppo is an innovative company that devotes a large part of its budget to R & D. Unknown in Europe, the brand is a reference in China and Asia. Despite this technical prowess, the public showed many reservations about the Oppo Find X. I had the chance to attend the Oppo conference and take over the Find X. In my opinion, it puts a real slap on industry giants like Apple, Samsung or Huawei. Criticism from the public and some industry professionals is, in my opinion, evidence of genuine bad faith. Because if Apple or Samsung had released such a smartphone, everyone would have shouted at the genius. To support their comments, the most critical point to three things: the retractable module, the screen (too) borderless and its high price. I peel them one by one.

Oppo Find X: its retractable module much criticized

The retractable module is undoubtedly the element most criticized by the observers. Oppo has developed this technology to offer a smartphone with a more borderless screen than ever before. The size / screen ratio of Find X is more than 93% unheard of. To achieve this result, Oppo, like its competitors, had to imagine new ways to unlock the smartphone and to house the photo sensors. The brand has chosen to create a technology that combines the two. No fingerprint reader under the screen, but a technology comparable to Face ID on the iPhone.

To not include a notch, Oppo has therefore imagined a retractable photo module that is reminiscent of our slider phones from the 90s. But unlike these old folks, the slide system is not manual, but automatic. As soon as the user sweeps his screen to access the Home, the module opens, detects his face, and the Find X unlocks. For photos, just launch the camera app to remove the module from its slot. It will automatically return when you close the app.

After the wonder, the first reviews appeared on the web. The first concerns the autonomy of the smartphone. A mechanical system is very greedy in energy. There is a good chance that the Find X will unload very quickly. Yes and ? In the views of iPhone sales for years, autonomy does not really seem to be a concern of users (the iPhone has always been one of the least enduring smartphones). If we forgive Apple willingly, why not Oppo who is otherwise bold? Note also that the Chinese is well aware of this constraint and offers to compensate for the fastest charging system on the market.

The other argument put forward by the most dubious: "if the module jams, that do we do it? "if the smartphone falls while taking a picture the module is screwed" . Once again, Oppo has planned everything. Against the falls, the brand developed an automatic retracting system. The accelerometer detects a change in gravity and closes the module automatically if it slides off when the user takes a picture. In what state finished the photo module or the screen of the iPhone X if it falls? The problem is exactly the same. A smartphone is not made to burst on the ground.

The approaching summer, the most fussy then explained that if grains of sand crept into the mechanism he could not function. That is true. But it is also the risk with a more clbadic smartphone. Sand is the sworn enemy of the smartphone forever. If a grain of sand slips into the photo module, into the USB-C or lightning port, into any small gap, that's a risk. And in any case, the guarantee does not work.

Finally, the question of the number of openings / closures of the module created the debate. How many repetitions does the module withstand? "If he is stuck, he can no longer use his smartphone" . Again Oppo took the lead. The manufacturer has carried out extensive quality checks to ensure that its module was resistant. For a typical user, the lifetime of the module is 5 years! When we know that the average renewal of a smartphone is 20 months, these five years seem good enough. No?

"The borderless screen is useless. "Oh!"

To a lesser extent, the Oppo Find X screen was also criticized. "What good is a screen without a border? "" the grip must be unpleasant "" if it falls it will cost a fortune ". I will not come back on the issue of falls that have the same consequences for any smartphone. Ask a repairer the price of a screen change of Samsung Galaxy S9 or iPhone X and you will understand the expression "it costs a kidney."

Regarding grip and interest of the borderless screen … how to say? … LOL? The search for the borderless screen is THE ultimate goal sought after by all manufacturers in recent years. So much so, that they have all (or almost) opted for a notch of the most unsightly to push the technical limits. Oppo, with its Find X, goes much further. And all of a sudden, the borderless has no interest, it is even uncomfortable. Say, it would not be bad faith?

If Apple or Samsung had reached such a ratio, all the media, all the observers, all the fans would have shouted at the genius. But it is about Oppo, a manufacturer unknown a Chinese brand with all that that entails in a country like France. It's Chinese, it's not quality. Oppo proves otherwise.

Its price is much too high

Proposed at nearly 1000 euros, the Oppo Find X is considered too expensive. I will not defend this tariff position, I have already written an editorial about it. I explain that no smartphone should display a tariff equivalent to a SMIC. A view that is obviously not shared by most users since the iPhone X, the most expensive smartphone on the market, is also the most sold . From this observation, we can deduce that a smartphone to 1000 euros is all that is normal.

Strangely, those who defend the tariff position of Apple, Samsung or Huawei, point finger of Oppo. Because the brand is new in France so it should not offer smartphone to 1000 euros. Because it is a Chinese brand, it is not allowed to offer a smartphone at 1000 euros. In my opinion, if it is estimated that an iPhone X 1000 euros is justified, then the Oppo Find X at the same price is just as much. It is technically much more advanced, it already incorporates the technologies that will probably be found in all smartphones within a few months. Consumers will eventually pull out these models. But they will have a nice logo of Apple crunched, and that, it is priceless
