Immediately, the memory of pain that distorted her face returned to her memory when the body of the bank employee was found in October 2017, in a wood of Haute-Saône.

This Wednesday, July 4, new rebound: Jonathann Daval again denies the murder of his wife. He now points to his brother-in-law, according to a source close to the AFP investigation, a detail that his lawyer did not confirm. Back on the successive turnovers of the suspect.

Killing of Alexia Daval: her husband Jonathann denies having killed her and accuses her brother-in-law

1 The "missing jogger"

The name of Alexia Daval appears in the press on October 29, 2017: the prosecutor of the Republic of Vesoul evokes the "disturbing disappearance" of a jogger of 29 years , and the launching of battues within a radius of 40 minutes in the area of Gray-la-Ville . Accident, suicide, kidnapping or meeting that would have gone wrong: the investigators do not exclude any track. The bottom of the Saone is even probed. The local and national press reports precedents of killings of joggers.

On October 30, a judicial inquiry for kidnapping and sequestration is opened: "given the profile of the young Alexia, not known as being suicidal and rather in good health, we envisage a dramatic scenario, that of a kidnapping and sequestration on the occasion of this jogging ", explains the prosecutor Emmanuel Dupic.

Her husband Jonathann, which participates in the researches, delivers its version : Alexia left their home in Gray-la-Ville on Saturday, October 28 at 9am, dressed in sportswear, to go running. Not seeing his wife return, party without his phone, he warned around noon the gendarmes of Haute-Saone. The day before, she had participated in a "happy" family meal with her parents, the Fouillot, who run a PMU coffee in Gray. It seemed to have no problem.

The call to witnesses is read by millions of people and rumors are rife. One mentions a white van. Another of a man who allegedly harbaded the young woman by telephone. A witness even claims to have seen the jogger. Anyway, the searches do not remain vain very long: hidden under branches, Alexia Daval's calcined body is discovered by a gendarme, October 30 in the afternoon, in an isolated wood near the place of disappearance. An investigation for murder is this time open.

2 Scratches and bites

The hypothesis of the murder of a jogger makes its way, to the point that in early November, hundreds of joggers pay tribute to Alexia Daval running in several cities of France. At the head of the procession … Jonathann Daval, who participates in the race alongside joggers. On November 5, he is once again present at a tribute march to his wife in Gray, attended by more than 8,000 people. In tears, Jonathann Daval is supported at arm's length by Alexia's parents. He declares:

"She was my first supporter, my oxygen. […] The strength of our couple made us surpbad ourselves, in our outings and in our common life. This plenitude I will miss terribly."

The autopsy shows that the death of Alexia Daval, beaten, is "probably related to asphyxiation". The funeral of the young woman takes place on November 8 at the basilica of Gray, Jonathann Daval is civil party, then the news deserts little by little newspapers.

But three months after the events, January 29 in the morning, theatrical: Jonathann Daval is stopped by the gendarmes at his home, which is raided. Investigators now explore the hypothesis of a "marital dispute that would have gone wrong". "The couple, who had difficulties to have a child, was in fact under intense tension," said one of them to AFP.

At his first hearing, as a simple witness Jonathann Daval had also evoked an argument with his companion the day before his disappearance. This altercation explained, according to him, the marks of scratches, even bites visible on his hands. He is now the main suspect, but fiercely denies. "He confirmed to me that under no circumstances was he related in any way to the death of his wife," says his lawyer, Mr. Randall Schwerdorffer. "We think that the absence of another suspect implies this custody."

3 Strangulation "by accident"

Custody is difficult. " It's very complicated to explain, but he maintains his version: they came home after a night at Alexia's parents, they stayed at home and she went for a jog," says Me Schwerdorffer .

Two elements "very heavy" are held against Jonathann Daval: a vehicle would be out of the home of the couple the night before the disappearance of Alexia and tire marks corresponding to those of the professional car of suspect, with a tracer, were found near the body of the young woman. "We have been given elements that […] actually, ask real questions and Jonathann is not suspected by chance, it's a reality," says Randall Schwerdorffer.

"The only person who is able to say whether he is guilty or innocent is himself. "

The investigators also found a tissue covering Alexia's body. According to the weekly "Point", it could be sheets belonging to the couple. Faced with these overwhelming elements, Jonathann Daval goes to table and admits to having killed his wife by accident. He is indicted and imprisoned . He "admitted to killing his wife but he said he did not want and he regrets", summarizes his lawyers.

"He strangled her", details to the press Me Schwerdorffer , baduring that his client had "not been in a criminal logic" and "did not involve anyone else": "He never tried to set Alexia's body on fire," he added.

"They had a relationship with very strong tensions, Alexia had an overwhelming personality, he felt degraded, crushed, at one point there were too many words, a crisis of too much, that he did not manage. […] "He tried to be that perfect son-in-law, he did not succeed. […] He strangled her and after, he was overwhelmed by everything "

4 Daval accuses his brother-in-law

It is now the story of the" perfect son-in-law who has become a murderer " Hidden behind the kind husband, publicly weeping, would have revealed himself as a meticulous killer: after killing his wife, he would have dressed her as a jogger, taken into the night, hidden in a wood, then burned. Alexia Daval's parents are dismayed by their lawyers "They did not see it coming. Now, they would like to understand, "says Jean-Marc Florand." It's a very hard blow to cash, because they had an absolute trust in Jonathann. "

In an interview with BFMTV in early March, Alexia's parents denounce the "scenario" orchestrated by their son-in-law "We were well manipulated," says Isabelle Fouillot, "betrayal," says Jean-Pierre Fouillot. Jonathann arrived at their home "in tears," "saying that something had happened to Alexia." The young man's brother-in-law, Grégory Gay, then took Jonathann Daval by car look for the jogger on his usual course of travel.

"A few hours before, he was doing his little tour (in Gray) to be seen in the city in absolute calm," remembers Gregory Gay "He saw Jean-Pierre at the bar […] he was relaxed before arriving in full urs at Isabelle's. It's disconcerting. […] Since when did he prepare that? "

Jonathann Daval was heard at his request by the investigating judge on June 27. A week later, the content of the hearing was revealed: the suspect denies again According to a source close to the AFP investigation, he admits to having been present at the scene of the crime, but without directly witnessing the murder: it is now his brother-in-law, Gregory Gay, that he accuses of having strangled Alexia in the night of October 27 to 28. This one would have tried to control it during a crisis of hysteria, says Jonathann Daval. According to "the republican East", the Fouillot family would then have pbaded "a secret pact to quell the affair."

"The version of Jonathann Daval is very clear: he did not kill his wife", but " no one is pointed at, "late Wednesday afternoon his lawyer Randall Schwerdorffer, unwilling "neither confirm nor deny" any accusations against the brother-in-law or the rest of the family.

"I formally deny the accusations of Jonathann Daval " , said on BFMTV Grégory Gay at his exit from the office of the magistrate. "It's a real nightmare," responded the mother of the victim, Isabelle Fouillot.

Any offender has the right to change version

According to a source close to the record, the material evidence corroborate the confession of Jonathann Daval at this stage and do not allow to suspect a possible complicity. The lawyer of the family Me Florand had recently confided his doubts to the "Republican East" about the confession of the suspect, reporting "inconsistencies" between its version, the material elements and the results of the autopsy:

" It misses the main one: the chronology of the facts, the motive of the crime, its mode of operation, the before and the after ".

"In France, anyone indicted has the right to silence and even lies: unlike what happens in particular in the United States, an incriminated person does not take an oath", recalls the magistrate Michèle Bernard-Requin on BFMTV. "He has every right to change his version, and he will be able to do it until the last moment."
