Évry – Sixty detainees refused to return to their cell on Monday at the Fleury-Mérogis Prison after a new suicide Saturday in the largest prison in Europe, facing a black series since the beginning of year.
  

After their walk in the courtyard, " about sixty inmates of the D4 building refused to return to their cell, in solidarity with a deceased detainee ," said Thibault Capelle, local representative of the union FO Penitentiary .

The protest movement, launched around 17:00, lasted nearly three hours. The detainees returned to their cells only after the intervention of the Regional Intervention and Security Teams (Eris), the " police " of the penitentiary.

" All the detainees were on the same floor as the one who committed suicide on Saturday ," said the unionist.

The prosecutor's office of Évry (Essonne) confirmed the suicide of a young man of 22 years, " to the disciplinary district " of the prison Saturday. " He was found hanged ," he detailed. An investigation has been opened.

The Fleury-Mérogis prison, which houses 4,300 men and women, is facing an unusual upsurge in suicides since the beginning of the year. At least nine inmates have committed suicide since January, more than in the previous two years.

Since 1 January, 60 inmates have committed suicide in French prisons, according to a count of the prison administration on 23 July.

In 2017, 117 suicides were recorded in prisons in France, a rate of 14.6 per 10,000 imprisoned.
