The next intermediate version of Windows 10 is in line of sight. Code name: Redstone 5. For beta time, it should be launched in October.
[Update] July 2018 at 7:30 pm The final release of the next Windows upgrade 10 ( code-named : Redstone 5) could occur in October if Microsoft retains its usual schedule. In the meantime, the publisher connects the betas. The last of them (build 17711) offers various ergonomic developments around the Edge browser, dynamic color management, or the Fluent design (with new shadow effects in the menus). Among its main developments, Redstone 5 will introduce the possibility of opening several applications within a single window (thanks to a tab mechanism equivalent to that of a web browser). Another evolution planned : the support of SwiftKey, the system of finger-touching by swipe (scanning fingers on the screen) of Microsoft, already available for Android and iOS. Redstone 5 should also incorporate a new screen capture function, but also a clipboard. As on Mac OS, the latter must allow to save content, text and images (via copy and paste) and synchronize them between different Windows terminals. Finally, Microsoft promises to enrich the search engine of the system of a results preview mode, but also to introduce a new feature to switch to mode S, a lighter and more powerful configuration of the OS (but which only allows applications from the Microsoft Store.]
Launched in July 2015, Windows 10 has pbaded the 700 million active devices according to the latest data from Microsoft unveiled in early December (this figure was 500 million in May latest). A volume that includes Windows 10 tablet or PC terminals, but also Xbox One consoles – which now also run under the Microsoft operating system. According to the latest figures from Netmarketshare, Windows 10 is installed on nearly 34% of desktop computers around the world.
Windows 10 and Office 365 updates are now synchronized. They intervene twice a year, around the months of March-April and September-October. In the wake of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update released early October, Microsoft has delivered late April a new update (code name: Redstone 4).
Officially baptized Windows 10 April 2018 Update, it began to be pushed by the publisher, via the internet, by focusing first on the most recent machines on which the risks of incompatibility are low. If you do not want to wait, you can download it. To do this, simply enter "search for updates" in the Windows 10 engine and click on the corresponding result. If the query does not work, you can also download the update wizard from Microsoft on its site. The Windows 10 April Update introduces seven important new features:
- eSIM. The update supports pre-integrated SIM cards. Objective: to avoid 4G laptop users having to go through the store box to activate their telecom subscription. To implement their connection, simply badociate the user's cloud profile with their package. Microsoft calls this new service "Always Connected". On the professional target side, the group announces an "Enterprise eSIM" offer that allows managing entire fleets of PCs equipped with eSIM (read the article: The "always connected PC", Microsoft's new weapon in mobility)
- Fluent Design (Neon project). Microsoft continues to deploy the new graphical interface of Windows 10 (Fluent Design). This one appears in the parameter management application.
- Timeline. This function allows to return to a previous state of Windows, and thus find applications, files or previously opened websites. Interesting point: the history in question is accessible via all the machines attached to the same Windows account. For now, this feature only supports a limited number of applications (Office, WordPad, Paint …). Microsoft intends to encourage Microsoft Store developers to implement it.
- Near Share. This device gives the possibility to exchange files between terminals via the Bluetooth or wi-fi wireless communication network protocols. Once activated via the notification center, it allows you to manage this sharing by right-clicking on the desired documents. For now, this service only supports Windows devices, but Microsoft plans to make it compatible in the future with iOS and Android (dixit the site MSPoweruser).
- Focus Assist. Accessible from the Settings menu, the Focus Assist function limits or blocks notifications in certain time periods to prevent the user from being distracted from a task or job.
- Diagnostic Data Viewer app. This new application allows viewing all the telemetry data that the OS communicates to Microsoft. This information is collected by the publisher and then used to optimize the performance of the operating system (read the detail on the Windows blog). A button has been added in parallel in the setup application to allow you to delete them. It is also now possible to restrict applications access to files.
- The ability to disable S mode. Windows 10 S mode was originally designed to equip lightweight laptops for the education sector. Designed to improve system performance, it is now available on other notebook categories (including ARM). Main constraint of this mode: it is limited to the Windows Store applications, the objective being to ensure a safer and more controlled experience by executing only applications validated by Microsoft. To overcome this constraint, a new function appears in the configuration console of Redstone 4, which will disable it if necessary (see the screenshot in the tweet below).

The future of Windows 10
For the rest, Microsoft was preparing to make the Cortana voice badistant profoundly evolve. Windows Central. First modification envisaged: a new graphical interface similar to that of Google's intelligent badistant on Android. It would aim to facilitate written exchanges alongside vocal interactions. Second change: the entry point of Cortana would no longer be the Start button of Windows 10 and the Bing search engine, but the Action Center of the OS (centralizing notifications, mails …) accessible to the right of the taskbar. Within Windows 10, Cortana would be repositioned as a universal chatbot combining voice and text interactions, with the ability to integrate all communication channels: intelligent badistant, alerts, mail, instant messaging, bots … The introduction in beta of Cortana Collections goes in the same direction.
In a longer-term perspective, Microsoft would be working in parallel on a rewrite of Windows to make it a more modular OS, and available for a wide variety of terminals. Project code name: Windows Core OS. According to Zdnet.com, the Andromeda project (which has already been leaked a lot) would benefit from Windows Core OS. It would aim to lead to a new type of Windows tablet with a foldable two-part screen. Alongside Andromeda, Microsoft is working on a new desktop GUI also based on Windows Core OS. Called Polaris, it would be backed by CShell, an autodimensionable interface depending on the size of the screen.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft would consider dropping the code name used internally for two years to designate Windows 10 (Redstone) updates. This term was introduced with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which was the first anniversary update of the OS launched mid 2016. So it was Redstone 1. The next update of the OS, expected to be released next September or October is Redstone 5. According to Windows Central, the next version of Windows 10, which is expected to be the first of 2019, could be called 19H1, with 19 as the year and H1 the first update of 2019. Should therefore come then 19H2, then 20H1, 20H2, and so on …

- A "cloud clipboard". A cloud-based clipboard is emerging to make it easier to copy and paste between devices (Windows 10, iOS / Android). Windows 10 also includes for the occasion a new icon to badociate a smartphone to his PC or tablet (Continue on PC), in order to facilitate the continuity of tasks between devices (read a web page, write a document …).
- OneDrive Files on Demand. Windows 10 can now open a file on the OneDrive file storage cloud environment without having to download it to the machine.

Like its predecessor (Windows Phone 8.1), Windows 10 Mobile is free. Designed for smartphones and phablettes (and more generally for terminals less than 9 inches), Windows 10 Mobile offers a look close enough to its predecessor, with a home screen showing apps as tiles. In October 2017, Microsoft announced that it was ceasing to develop this OS, but said that it would continue to offer security updates.
- Processor : 1 GHz or faster
- RAM Memory : 1 GB (for a 32-bit architecture) or 2 GB (64-bit)
- disk space : 16 GB
- graphics card : DirectX 9 device with WDDM driver
Updating an existing terminal requires Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update, as well as a Microsoft account and Internet access. Some older 64-bit processors can also block the installation. To access the Windows Store and download apps from a terminal under Windows 10, Microsoft says it is necessary to have a screen with a resolution of at least 1024 x 768 pixels, and a Microsoft account. 19659077]
