Gigazoom, gigaboîtier
24-3000 mm: it's the beach record focal length of this CoolPix P1000. What to see wide and far … but not in the same conditions of brightness. In wide angle (24 mm), we take advantage of an opening f / 2.8, enough to make beautiful landscapes clear even in difficult light. But at the end of zoom, the diaphragm closes wickedly since it goes to f / 8. While we have no doubt that Nikon has perfectly anticipated the problems of diffraction, it is however clear that the zoom potential of the P1000 will be fully expressed in full light. For the lions of Kenya it will do it, but for the gorillas of the dense forests of the Virunga, it may be more complicated.
Side housing, the P1000 is a sacred baby: with 1.4 kg on the scale, this Monster is the heaviest bridge of the moment and by far. What to integrate good components as a 2.36 Mpix OLED slab for the electronic viewfinder, which promises comfort unique sighting in the category of bridges. The screen is not left out since it is a slab 3.2 inches (8.1 cm diagonal) of 921 000 points as in many SLR.
The mbadive case offered to Nikon has enough surface to work a pronounced grip and integrate many controls (side zoom, return button at initial focus, etc.) that highlight the performance of the device. On the electronic side we find the 4K video not only 30p but also 60p (hopefully this is done without cropping) and the RAW file format. A format that will be useful to overcome the natural weaknesses of the sensor.
… but small sensor
The sensor is the limit of this P1000: while Sony and its RX10 benefit from a large 1 inch sensor, the P1000 is content with a component in 1 / 2.3 "format. Or the same kind of sensor that is found in the devices (photo and smartphone) entry / mid-range. Admittedly, it is thanks to this small size of sensor that Nikon can propose such a powerful zoom in such a compact format.
But photo fans among you know that between 2000 mm and 3000 mm (in equivalent 24×36) the difference is not so discriminating. A zoom as powerful as the P900 but brighter or better, or if a slightly larger sensor (1 / 1.7 '') would have been desirable. But preferring a zoom "monster" is the marketing side that has scored points.
The Nikon P1000 will be available in early September 2018 to 1099 euros. All you have to do is save for the safari that goes with the case!
