Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step) suffers from a fracture of the left patella after his spectacular fall in the descent of the Col du Portet d'Aspet, during the 16th stage of the Tour de France, won by teammate Julian Alaphilippe on Tuesday.
While he had managed to finish the race despite a very bad left knee, the Belgian rider was forced to announce his retirement, unable to bend and lean on his knee. "Unfortunately, the complementary examination carried out at the Toulouse hospital revealed that Gilbert suffered a fracture on the lateral pole of his left knee" said the Belgian training.
"First of all, I want to say that I am happy to be here after this difficult time commented Gilbert on the site of his team. I landed pretty hard on rocks, and at first I did not want to move. But someone from Mavic (who badists the Tour) came and helped me up and up the ravine. That's not the way I wanted to end the Tour, so leaving it really hurts. "
