RAM: Samsung presents a first prototype of LPDDR5

While the LPDDR4 is still not supported by Intel, we are already preparing for its successor, the LPDDR5 of course. Samsung has introduced the first prototype of this new RAM standard, a chip of 8 GB of RAM cut for a portable use that will provide 50% higher rates and especially a reduction of the order of 30% of power consumption. It will have to be patient to benefit, however, Samsung is not yet ready to start production and the standard is not even defined yet.

The current standard for RAM is DDR4, a standard launched in 2014 that provides higher execution speeds with reduced power consumption (read: DDR4: what is it? does this bring to iMac?). As for DDR3, a format adapted to mobile devices was launched, the LPDDR4 (LP for " Low Power "), but unlike the LPDDR3, this format is not always supported by Intel . The latest generation of Intel processors, called Coffee Lake, does not yet manage this standard and it will be necessary to wait for the next, Cannon Lake, so that it finally is the case.

It is not until 2019 that the LPDDR4 will finally be really supported by Intel and that we will see laptops equipped with this standard. How many more years will it take for the LPDDR5 to arrive in our computers? Work on DDR5 began last year, but finalized specifications are expected by the end of this year. It will then wait for it to be adopted by Intel, which will probably take several years.

Nevertheless, the LPDDR is not only used for laptops, it is found mainly in our smartphones and other tablets. The iPhone and iPad have already been using the LPDDR4 for several years and we imagine that Apple is waiting for the LPDDR5 with impatience, if only for the decline in power consumption. It is precisely for this reason that Samsung did not wait for the finalization of the standard to present this prototype, the company advances its pawns as soon as possible.

Coming back to computers, Intel's delay in supporting the LPDDR4 explains why Apple has long been limited to 16GB of RAM on its Mac laptops (read: MacBook Pro: Intel limits Apple (on quantity of RAM)). With the new generation, 15 inches can go up to 32 GB, but the manufacturer was forced to opt for the clbadic DDR4, more energy hungry. To maintain the same battery life, the battery capacity has been increased. On 13 inches, we are stuck at 16 GB and it is still the LPDDR3 is used.
