The strength of a movie script

Red Dead Redemption 2 is before an immense western, a film of which you are of hero. With your hero, the taciturn and always efficient Arthur Morgan, you wander wild West United States. There is no doubt the great strength of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the biggest fault of the last Zelda : a rich, dense story, with twists and a real narrative talent. It's the story (certainly linear) that drives you to continue Red Dead while Breath of The Wild considered his own story as a pretext, a very optional element.

In this game, it is for example possible to run from the first hour to the final boss and finish the game at once. Freedom is total. Such a thing is totally unthinkable in Red Dead Redemption 2. A very beautiful, strong and rigorous thread must be followed.

Rehabilitation by ergonomics

Red Dead Redemption 2 sees a major criticism come back in the mouths of the players: the controls. The designers of the game were keen to make the player's experience very realistic … and counter-intuitive. The character for example moves very slowly, he walks and runs rarely. Shooting with a rifle, a bow or throwing his lbado on horseback is not a trivial gesture.

These actions provoke reactions in other characters and sometimes you have to press three buttons to finally start an action. We choose his weapon, we wear it, we draw, we aim, we shoot, we recharge … And these gestures take time. A habit to take.

There is not only the problem of time wasting (because who really enjoys traveling in a gigantic world at the speed of a sick snail?). The game also asks the player toforget his habits. The controls are different from the standards of the other games. The first few hours are spent looking at the bottom right of the screen to find out which button to press for this or that result.


An example: objects. Ammunition is recovered by walking on it, money and items with another button, your hat with another one … It's like playing a game of combat or choreography manipulations are raging. The menus are also very convoluted and difficult to maneuver. Your brain wants to perform an action, but everything is done to counter your will. And it's not very nice.

The goal is to slow down the player's paceto make him aware of the gestures and to bring him closer to real life. Only problem: by removing the players' reflexes, Red Dead Redemption 2 makes his players leave his world. Zelda: Breath of The Wild on the contrary was a monument of ergonomics. Displacements, objects, abilities, environment and interactions were a pleasure of every moment and a great source of inventiveness for the players.

Realism vs fantastic

It's a safe bet that fans of Red Dead have a hard time accepting the storyline flaws and physical inconsistencies of Zelda. And vice versa. Those who enjoyed the great freedom of action and incredible fluidity of Breath of The Wild will probably have some impatience with rigid realism cowboys from Rockstar Games.

Despite the very similar style of the two games – epic adventures in gigantic worlds open to ride on horseback – the two titles remain very related to their genre. The western for one and the fantasy for the other.
