SFR goes to 4G + at 500 Mb / s while waiting for 5G

SFR has just announced the transition to 4G + with speeds up to 500 Mb / s. However, do not expect to have access everywhere …

While all eyes are now turned to the 5G to come, SFR announces an improvement of its current network with the launch of the 4G + at 500 Mb / s, a significant improvement of the flows of the operator.

At the moment, the official site of SFR announces a maximum flow in 4G of 187.5 Mb / s, but some agglomerations can reach speeds of up to 300 Mb / s in 4G + since 2017. Today, the operator with the red square goes further thanks to the aggregation of 4 frequency bands: 800, 1800, 2600 and 2100 MHz. However, you need a compatible terminal for that. In bulk, we can mention among others the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9, the iPhone 8 and X, the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the Sony Xperia XZ2, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 or the OnePlus 6. This list is good certainly not exhaustive

Limited coverage

Another constraint to take full advantage of a theoretical throughput of up to 593 Mb / s: to be under cover. And this is where the exercise may be more difficult. At present, only the city of Bordeaux is covered in 4G + with such flows by SFR. However, the operator intends to extend this area to the cities of Marseille and Lyon by the end of the summer.

Finally, more than 10 major cities will be covered by the end of 2018. In its roadmap published last March, SFR evoked Clermont-Ferrand (already partly covered since 2017), St Etienne, Montpellier, Avignon, Toulon, Nice, Nantes, Tours, Paris and Strasbourg.

To infinity and the 5G

The network of operators continues to improve and SFR already promises 4G speeds of up to 1 Gb / s as of 2019. Remember however that to reach such a speed, SFR relies on the aggregation of 5 carriers, including 2 on the 3500 MHz band, frequency band allocated to the Wimax network and retained for the 5G NR.

Finally, the 5G is expected for 2020.
