The elected officials of this city of the Pyrénées-Orientales can not agree on the use of the budget – yet surplus – of the city. The regional chamber of accounts enjoins the municipality to no longer charge local taxes.
It attracted the French for its cheaper alcohol and tobacco, the city of Perthus, straddling the Franco-Spanish border, could now offer an additional badet: a local tax exemption for its some 600 inhabitants. This is in any case what advocates the Chamber of Accounts of the Occitanie region. Its judges voted last July 6 a budget notice urging the town to " bring to 0 euros the proceeds of the housing tax, property tax and property tax on undeveloped properties "
A budget surplus of 1.1 million euros …
No more local taxes, how is this possible? In fact, the city earns more than it spends. The Perthus which, as we have said, attracts a lot of people because of its proximity to Spain and precisely the city of El Limits, makes money thanks to its car parks and parking meters, the French customers of the Iberian shops preferring to cross the border on foot. According to Midi Libre which quotes an "observer" it would represent 800 000 euros per year. Also in 2017, the financial reserves of the city have reached a surplus of 1.1 million euros.
But if the accounting chamber calls the town hall to remove local taxes, it is mainly because this surplus n has not been used. And magistrates do not fail to recall in their opinion that the municipal council of Perthus has still not managed to agree on the programming of expenses.
… and elected officials who beat each other
It must be said that the city council seems to have better things to do, with the elected officials spending their time to help themselves. The reason: no one agrees on how the budget should be spent. The crisis dates back to 2015 with the resignation of the previous mayor. But since that is not better. At the last meeting of the badembly, April 14, the mayor of Perthus had to interrupt the meeting while the insults and threats were fired between the public and the elected officials who almost came to blows.
