All sails in the wind, she arrives majestic at the port of Lorient (Morbihan). After two and a half years sailing in the Pacific, the schooner Tara is welcomed by a warm public. A woman from the public had seen the boat in Papeete (Tahiti) and came for her return. The schooner was on a scientific expedition to examine the condition of the corals. "Tara Pacific, providing the elements of comparison (…) will help to know what is the right combination that will make the reef will be able to resist or not"says Denis Allemand, co-scientific director of Tara Pacific.
Tara has traveled 100,000 kilometers to witness the state of the coral reef and the impact of global warming. 36,000 samples were collected and will be carefully badyzed. "We arrived on fairly degraded reefs, there had been bleaching, so damaged corals"says Émilie Boissin, scientific coordinator of Tara Pacific. According to her, it is global warming that is at stake. 20% of coral reefs are already destroyed and equally threatened in the next forty years.
