The strike cost the SNCF 790 million euros

The railway workers' movement against the government's railway reform cost the SNCF a total of 790 million euros, or more than 21 million for each of the 37 strike days between 22 March and 28 June, according to one internal document consulted Friday by AFP

This amount, calculated taking into account the latest available elements, such as the reduction of toll revenues for SNCF Network, is in line with the estimates already communicated in the spring by the management. The head of the SNCF, Guillaume Pepy, had mentioned early April a cost "of the order of 20 million euros per day."

The loss of 790 million euros suffered because of the strike exceeds the profit net recorded by the Group in 2017 (€ 679 million). Most of the slate is due to a loss of turnover of 770 million euros.

Of this total, 600 million revenue was lost for pbadenger activities, many people gave up take the train because of traffic disruptions. In addition, 60 million sales were lost in freight, with some companies preferring to switch to other modes of transport. The rest comes from a reduction of contributions from the authorities organizing transport linked to reductions in the invoicing of tolls.

To the lost revenue is added a cost of 160 million euros for the commercial measures implemented. by the railway company in order to reduce the damage suffered by its customers

The SNCF notably granted compensation for their subscriptions to TGV, Intercités, TER and Transilien users. The commercial measures also include free TGV Max subscriptions for the month of April, discounted tickets, the free IDVroom carpool service on strike days … These discounts cost 120 million euros. Still among the commercial measures, many replacement buses were put in place during the strikes, at a cost of 40 million euros.

The movement of the railroads was however also translated by a reduction of the loads of the company for 140 million euros. This decrease comes from deductions on wages for 100 million euros and lower expenses (in electricity in particular) related to the lowest number of running gear.

Interviewed by AFP, SNCF confirmed these figures. "The total cost of the strike reflects both the loss of turnover suffered by the company but also the unprecedented amount of 160 million euros of commercial measures decided by SNCF to support its customers and limit the financial impact of the strike on them, "commented a manager.
