The unions of the Eiffel Tower threaten a strike against the long queues

The personal of the Eiffel Tower are angry and wish that the reception of the visitors is more effective. For this reason, staff representatives are discussing Wednesday, August 1 the filing of a strike notice, after initially scheduled a strike that day. A general badembly was held on Wednesday morning to discuss the date of the future strike.

The CGT criticizes the management for having dedicated the north pillar access to the Tower at the reception of visitors with pre-sales, and the other pillar to all others. An organization implemented by the "Company of Exploitation of the Eiffel Tower (SETE) which generates queues sometimes monstrous" and "often completely unbalanced", explained the union in a statement.

Endless queues

The union denounces "significant distortions in the two lines", ensuring that the elevator dedicated to visitors with presales goes up almost empty during certain niches – evening and beginning of afternoon – while lines lasting up to three hours form at the other pillar. Conversely, according to the CGT, when slots are in high demand, the dedicated elevator is this time unable to absorb the flow, and customers with pre-sales are forced to wait beyond their schedule, " often more than an hour.

The union recognizes, however, that the decision to increase, since the beginning of July to 50%, the proportion of tickets opened to the reservation by time slot (against 20% previously) "is a good thing, we live with our time" , says the organization to AFP. Also, it proposes that all visitors can "access the two pillars", with "a priority queue" for tickets purchased in presale. "Beyond the waste generated in terms of efficiency, dissatisfaction of the visitors (…) the agents of reception are exhausted", criticizes the CGT.

The Company of exploitation of the Eiffel Tower, the SETE , for its part that for visitors with presale, "the wait time is very low", and that for "visitors without ticket, the waiting time (…) remains the same as last year while the number of visitors has increased ".

She also indicates that she will make every effort to keep the monument open. Discussions are underway with the trade unions, the company said in a statement. The goal ? "Find reasonable compromises."
