Around 7 pm, a building collapsed completely on rue Bourbon, in the city center of Charleville-Mézières, under the lens of our camera.

Half an hour before, a resident of the building was evacuated. Firefighters had been called to secure the place. A hole had formed in the stairwell. A young resident had warned her landlady, who advised her to leave the building.

Miraculously, no victim is to be deplored. There were no other people in the building at the time of the tragedy. Unfortunately two or three pets could not be saved.

17 people relocated

Bourbon Street and adjacent streets (rue de République, rue Thiers, rue de l'Arquebuse) are closed to the public. About fifty people were evacuated.

Until the building inspection services intervene, 17 people were taken in charge by the services of the city to bring them comfort and food. Six people were rehoused by the town hall, the others found refuge with friends or their families.

The building destabilized by works

For the moment, we do not know the exact causes of this collapse. What is known is that work was underway on the site of the future H & M located just behind the building. The hypothesis advanced indicates that these works could have destabilized the building. An investigation has been opened.

In a statement, the prefecture of the Ardennes said that "the building (…) did not have the characteristics of an unworthy or unhealthy habitat".
