A competitor of the iPhone XS Max and Galaxy Note 9. With the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei does not hide its ambitions. Presented by the Chinese manufacturer mid-October, this new high-end smartphone arrives in France this week. Is he really up to his competitors? Does it offer the same photo result as the highly successful P20 Pro, marketed by Huawei in the spring? Europe 1 could try it.
A reworked design. Huawei had reached a milestone with the P20 Pro, its design was more worked, its materials better chosen … With the Mate 20 Pro, the manufacturer goes further: it offers a large smartphone that fits well in the hand thanks to the edges curved on the sides, where the P20 Pro tended to slide. The downside: this choice lacks some originality and immediately reminds the design of another smartphone, the Galaxy S9 Samsung. The slightly textured back also allows a better hold. The lock button is easily accessible on the right edge. The volume management buttons, placed on the right side also, are more difficult to access and impractical to use.
An AMOLED display with integrated fingerprint sensor. The screen of 6.39 inches with a definition of 3.120 x 1.440 pixels offers him a very good image quality. Thanks to its AMOLED technologies, it allows you to display more vivid colors, a higher contrast ratio and deeper blacks. The curved edges on the sides do not interfere with reading. Main novelty: the fingerprint sensor that unlocks the device is now placed under the screen. A small icon indicates where to place your finger to operate the system. But the result is significantly less effective than traditional fingerprint sensors. The first setting takes longer and requires you to position your finger multiple times. Unlocking is then slightly longer and the level of failure is greater.
A fluid smartphone, good autonomy. Inside, Huawei has opted for a Kirin 980 home processor. It largely allows to run all applications without any problem. The games and energy-hungry software that we tried did not pose any problem to the smartphone. Another advantage: this processor is also more energy efficient and offers good autonomy to the Mate 20 Pro. It is then possible to keep a day and a half away from its charger, which also allows fast charging.
Beautiful photos, not always right. As for the photo, the Mate 20 Pro is equipped with three 40MPixels, 20MPixels and 8MPixels sensors. The first is used as the main sensor, the second as a wide-angle sensor and the third as a Telephoto sensor that allows zooming in the image. The whole is supported by a double LED flash. Result, the images are of very good quality and the software management of the photos allows to realize very beautiful shots. In low light, the effects of light are particularly successful. However, it is necessary to accommodate the treatment of the image which changes the colors quite widely to magnify the image. Beauty at the expense of realism.
Our opinion. The Mate 20 Pro is a very large and very good smartphone. Very large in the sense that it will not fit everyone and may not fit in all pockets of pants, very good in the sense that it offers a very large screen and therefore increased reading comfort. The design is successful, especially for the twilight color, and the photo sensor makes beautiful shots. A success that still has a price: from 999 euros.
