The 4 p.m. ET deadline for signing franchise-marked players for long-term expansions has passed, and as several of the seven players worked with their respective teams to try and beat the buzzer, only one succeeded.
An hour before the deadline, the Carolina Panthers and right tackle Taylor Moton agreed to a four-year extension that will make him one of the highest paid in his role. He joins Dak Prescott, Leonard Williams and Justin Simmons as players who were able to secure long-term extra time before having to play the 2021 season on the tag. What about the other six players? Let’s break them down.
Godwin was unable to match the career numbers he posted in 2019, but he had to deal with several injuries as well as additions from tight end Rob Gronkowski and compatriot Antonio Brown in the receiving match. Still, Godwin played a significant role in that charged offensive attack in 2020 and is only 25 years old. He’s likely a player the Buccaneers will try to keep.
Robinson already made the Pro Bowl with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 after a monster season of 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s played three seasons in Chicago now, and 2020 was his best with a career-high 102 catches. Despite the quarterback’s erratic play over the past few years, Robinson has found a way to establish himself as one of the top receivers in the NFL. With a big year, Robinson could secure himself a lucrative contract, and he’s confident 2021 will be a successful campaign.
Jacksonville Jaguars: OT Cam Robinson ($ 13.75 million)
Some were surprised to see Robinson get tagged, but keeping your starting left tackle while you work in a rookie quarterback is a good idea. Robinson was a second-round pick in 2017 in Alabama and occupied the left side of the Jaguars line for almost four years. If he can prepare for a career year in 2021, it will be interesting to see what Jacksonville does in the next offseason.
Scherff will spend his second consecutive season on the franchise label. The No.5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft outside Iowa served as right guard for six years at an elite level. Scherff has been named to the Pro Bowl in four of the past five years and has improved his game while playing on the franchise tag by winning his first All-Pro nod last season. CBS Sports cap guru Joel Corry believes Scherff can reset the market next offseason when he turns 30. We’ll see if he gets that money from Washington, or if he goes to greener pastures, much like Kirk Cousins did.
Jets rocked, according to NFL.com Maye with an offer 20% below the amount of his tag, and he doesn’t seem very happy with his current situation. The 28-year-old has recorded six career interceptions – including two last season – as well as 88 combined tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles in 2020.
Williams is coming off an impressive 2020 campaign, in which he recorded 59 combined tackles, seven assists defended and three interceptions. According to PFF, Williams recorded a score of 78.6 in 2020, ranking sixth among safeties. In 60 career regular-season games with the Saints, Williams has recorded 13 interceptions and has been a constant in high school. All signs indicate that he will cash well next year.
