PITTSBURGH – Just a day after putting their last key bat back on the roster / bench, the Mets have another major injury issue.
Francisco Lindor was placed on the 10-day injury list on Saturday with a right oblique strain, leaving the Mets without one of their best hitters for the foreseeable future. Oblique strains generally have a recovery time of 4-6 weeks.
Lindor was injured in a swing in the fifth inning on Friday night, in which he hit a Grounder on second base and hit his right side. He only took a few steps out of the batter’s box before turning right and heading for the cover of first base. Lindor, 28, has a 0.228 / 0.326 / 0.376 slash line with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs.
Lindor’s injury came just as he had started producing at a high level for the Mets. After a slow start to the season, Lindor has a .333 / .489 / .500 line in July with two homers and 10 RBIs.
After months of trying to bring the main offensive players together, JD Davis returned from IL on Friday, leaving the Mets whole in a way, if only for a few hours. Jeff McNeil, Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo are other players who have returned from long stays in IL in recent weeks. Lindor, who signed a $ 341 million contract extension in March, had been among the team’s most enduring players this season, appearing in every game but one.
Travis Blankenhorn has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Lindor’s place. Luis Guillorme played the last four innings from the shortstop on Friday and could be an option there at least part-time.
It is possible that Lindor’s injury will cause the front office to trade for a shortstop option such as Trevor Story or Javier Baez (both of whom are in their years of walking for exhibition teams) who can be transferred. on third base once Lindor returns. But the Mets also signed Jonathan Villar in part last offseason due to his shortstop experience.
Most of Villar’s playing time came on third base – Davis was just activated on Friday after 2.5 months on the IL after rehabilitating a torn ligament in his left hand. Prior to Lindor’s injury, Rojas had suggested that Villar and Davis would split playing time in third place, but that plan may already be stale given the latest circumstances.
Lindor arrived at the Mets last winter with Carlos Carrasco as part of a deal that sent Amed Rosario, Andres Gimenez and two prospects to Cleveland. Veteran pitcher Carrasco still hasn’t pitched for the Mets this season after tearing his right hamstring during spring practice. His first start in minor league rehab was last Thursday.
