Frank Lampard warns Chelsea ‘don’t live in the real world’ if they expect instant results from expensive summer signings, and calls for response against Man City after being ‘knocked down’ over Christmas

  • Frank Lampard urged Chelsea summer signings to need more time to settle in
  • Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have failed to impress since arriving this summer
  • Lampard said some ‘don’t live in the real world’ expect instant success
  • He also compared the German duo to former stars Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard

Frank Lampard has insisted that new Chelsea summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz need more time to settle into the Premier League.

The German pair were Lampard’s two most notable additions to his summer spending spree with Werner costing £ 47million from RB Leipzig and Havertz joining for an initial £ 62million at Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite their expensive transfer fees, none of them have yet thrived in the Premier League as we move into the mid-season of the season.

Werner has scored just four leading goals for the Blues this season, while playmaker Havertz has just one goal and one assist.

After a loss to Arsenal and a draw with Aston Villa, Lampard once again stood up for his summer signings, saying that anyone who expects them to do their best right away “ doesn’t live in the real world ”.

He told Sky Sports: “ If you think you’re going to be consistent this year just because you’ve brought in new players who need to settle in, and we still have the young players, playing against tough teams in the Premier League every week. then you don’t live in the real world.

“The real world has pushed us to the back for the last two or three weeks during a busy period and we have to show that we are stronger than that and overcome it.

After suffering a transfer ban the previous season for breaking the rules of financial fair play, the club greeted a whole series of expensive arrivals at Stamford Bridge by engaging Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy in important moves.

However, Werner and Havertz were the most criticized for their underperformance, but Lampard compared the German duo to some of Chelsea’s past foreign signings such as Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard.

The Chelsea boss has explained that some of the top flight’s best players need time to find their feet after arriving from a foreign league and insisted they will reap the rewards of their talents in time.

“Didier in the first year certainly wasn’t producing the numbers he was throughout his career or had a huge impact, he was still very good,” he continued.

“Eden Hazard, I was here for his first year. Extremely talented player, coming to adapt and in two or three seasons he will honor the Premier League at the top, sometimes scoring 50% of our goals.

“You look at Thierry Henry, Kevin de Bruyne, (Mohamed) Salah, stories everywhere. The spotlight these days, with social media, everyone is waiting for it now, all the variables surrounding it.

“ The minute we have to put this aside, be patient and we’re doing okay too. The team is improving. I’ve always believed in hard work and when you have talent like these guys, you just have to stick with it.

Despite a brilliant start to the season under Lampard, Chelsea are now seven points behind league leaders Liverpool before Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.
