The “Free Britney” movement has reached the halls of Congress with a pair of bipartisan lawmakers this week introducing new legislation to protect the rights of about 1.3 million Americans in custody, including pop star Britney Spears.
Representatives Nancy Mace, RS.C., and Charlie Crist, D-Fla., Announced their FREE law on Tuesday to give people under guardianship more opportunities to ask a judge to replace their guardian and assign them an assistant independent social watch for signs of abuse.
Lawmakers have praised Spears for courage in speaking out against his guardianship and exposing the broader issues with the court-appointed guardian system that impacts many people beyond Hollywood.

“She had the opportunity… to shine a light on this abuse with ordinary Americans,” Mace said Tuesday at a virtual press conference where she spoke in front of a pink Spears poster and wore a “Free” shirt. Spears recently gave a chilling account in court of the toll her 13-year-old guardianship has taken on her body and mind, explaining how she has no control over her money or drugs and has been forced to take contraception against his will.

Crist said the legislation would establish much-needed federal safeguards to protect people from abuse and exploitation and implement increased transparency measures.
“Under the FREE Act we would free Britney and the untold numbers of elderly and disabled people who have been abused and exploited by the broken system,” Crist said.

Some lawmakers have invited Spears to Washington to testify before Congress about his ongoing ordeal. One of them is Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Who recently appeared in Spears Trusteeship Court in Los Angeles and called out Spears’ dad for controlling the popstar’s life.
