PARIS – French prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations that former Renault president Carlos Ghosn allegedly benefited from the historic castle of Versailles.

The survey, reported by AFP, constitutes the first such investigation into the activity of Ghosn in France. The former leader, who was also president of Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors, is expected to hold a press conference this week in Tokyo.

This new development is likely to affect public opinion in France.

In February, Renault alerted French prosecutors on a sponsorship deal signed with Versailles in June 2016. In what is presumed to be a favor for a donation, Ghosn celebrated his wedding at the Grand Trianon in Versailles in October this year.

The prosecution wants to know if the rent of 50,000 euros from the palace have been removed in favor of Ghosn.

Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are putting in place a new management system after Ghosn's departure. They will hold a joint press conference at Nissan headquarters in Yokohama on Tuesday.
