WILBRAHAM (CBS) – Friendly's has decided to close 23 sites in the north-east of the country, said Monday the CEO of the iconic restaurant chain in a letter to franchisees.
Fourteen corporate-owned restaurants will close in upstate New York, three in Massachusetts, three in Connecticut, two in New Hampshire and one in Maine. The closures include locations on Temple Street in Framingham, Main Street in Holden, Lexington Street in Waltham, West Street in Keene and Daniel Webster Highway in Nashua.
The closures will leave Friendly with 77 corporate-owned restaurants and 97 franchise-owned restaurants.
Friendly CEO George Michel said the decision to close so many restaurants was made after "several months of evaluation and careful consideration".
"Although it was a difficult decision, we are confident that this will position the brand for a bright future," he wrote. "The impact of these closures on the wonderful employees of the sites, which we work to support opportunities in other sites or severance pay and other forms of assistance, is particularly difficult."
Friendly's began serving as an ice cream shop in Springfield in 1935.
