As the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted millions of jobs and most businesses, many workers have kept their jobs and wages, and some have seen their wages rise.
The median salary has changed 5% or less in either direction for about a third of the companies in the S&P 500. It has increased by more than 5% at 184 companies and fell by more than 5% at 125.
These are among the revelations of a Wall Street Journal analysis of annual disclosures by 492 companies using data provided by MyLogIQ. To see the median salary of companies in the S&P 500, search or sort the table near the bottom of this article.
Nearly 140 companies in the S&P 500, including Netflix Inc. and the CSX Corp. Railroad, said their median worker was paid at least $ 100,000 last year. Four dozen, including Starbucks Corp. and Amazon.com Inc., said their median worker earned less than $ 30,000 last year. The salaries of these four companies have changed little compared to 2019.
Wages in the U.S. economy remain on the move in 2021, with tight labor markets and rising wages in many areas, especially for low-paid frontline workers. Here’s a snapshot of the data for 2020:
