FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Southern Floridians could possibly have a faster way to get to Walt Disney World.

Brightline and Disney on Monday announced an agreement for the high-speed passenger train to build a station at Disney Springs, the shopping and entertainment complex in the central Florida resort town.

The project is awaiting local government approval.

Brightline already has stations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and a stop at Orlando International Airport is expected to be completed in 2022, according to the company. A schedule for the Disney Springs resort was not immediately announced.

Brightline also plans to expand from Orlando to Tampa and add stations in Boca Raton, Aventura, and PortMiami.

“Brightline will provide a car-free connection to the millions of visitors from across the state and around the world who plan to make Walt Disney World Resort part of their vacation plans,” Brightline President Patrick Goddard said in a statement. “Our mission has always been to connect our guests with the people and places that matter, and the Walt Disney World Resort is a prime example.”

In the same press release, Walt Disney World Resort President Jeff Vahle said, “We are delighted to be working with Brightline as they pursue the potential development of a station at Walt Disney World Resort, a project that would support our local economy. and deliver a bold, forward-looking transportation solution for our community and our customers.

Here in South Florida, Brightline’s new station at Aventura Mall was supposed to have been built last October, but delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic have pushed back its scheduled completion to fall 2021.
