CLEVELAND, Ohio – It all depends on Sam Hentges.
Whether or not the Indians have a set of pens every time they flip the starting spin will depend on how Hentges throws.
The last three times per rotation, this is how it worked following the demotion of JC Mejia to AAA Columbus class. On August 9, Hentges started and played two innings in a 9-3 win over the Reds. On August 14, he started and pitched two innings in a 6-4 loss to Detroit. He moved up to four innings on Friday, allowing a run in a 9-1 win over the Angels.
“We’ve had this long streak of 20 games in 20 days,” said interim manager DeMarlo Hale. “Then we had a few days off and were able to push the guys away (to give them some extra rest). I expect Hentges to start when their time comes. I thought he threw the ball pretty well on Friday. He was on a number of throws and now he will be able to jump 15-17 more throws.
“I expect these five to continue with Cal Quantrill, Zach Plesac, Triston McKenzie, Eli Morgan and Hentges.”
The next start for Hentges is set to be Thursday against Rangers. The chance to go from an opener in two innings to a starter looks him straight in the eye. Could that chance disappear if and when Aaron Civale or Shane Bieber return from the injured list? Of course he could, but right now he’s hanging in front of him.
The first year in the big leagues hasn’t been boring for Hentges (1-4, 7.52). He has appeared in 20 games, including 11 starts. He struck out 51 strikes, walked 28 and allowed 75 hits in 52 2/3 innings.

Civale will hold a bullpen session on Wednesday to determine when he will begin his second rehab. Civale made his first start on Sunday for Class AA Akron, pitching two scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
The 10-game winner, recovering from a strained right middle finger, threw 39 shots, including 24 strikes. Civale said he threw fastballs, cut fastballs and made changes. It exceeded 91 mph.
In other rehab news, outfielder Harold Ramirez (right hamstring) and first baseman Bobby Bradley (left knee) are scheduled to play for Lake County Class A on Tuesday night.
Shane Bieber, meanwhile, kicked off another bullpen session on Tuesday.

“I think they’re improving as pitchers,” Hale said. “Those who wrestled early on, I try not to use the term young because when you’re at the major league level you’re supposed to compete at a certain level, but in the same sense I think they’ve been improved.
“They’re starting to figure out some things they need to do. You see the starting pitchers put together a series of games where they started the sixth inning. There were a few hiccups, but that’s planned too.
Morgan, who started Tuesday night, pitched at least five innings in eight of his last nine starts. Quantrill has pitched six or more innings in seven of his last nine starts. Morgan opened the season with extended spring practice in Goodyear, Ariz., And Quantrill was in the bullpen.

Closer Emmanuel class could have the chance to face his former team, the Rangers, in this series. He threw 349 of his 800 throws (44%) at 100 mph or more. These are the biggest pitches at 100 mph or more this season. Jacob of Grom, who has been on and off the injured list, is next at 185.
