A $ 250 Gengar pillow is launched in Japan, and it’s … well, it fits the character.
But if you’re in the mood to get your hands on it, you’re probably out of luck. The plush, developed by P-Bandai, was made available for pre-order last night, but sold out in under 75 minutes.
The cushion, inspired by the classic phantom Pokémon, measures 48 cm high and 53 cm wide. It’s a bit smaller than its “ real ” size – the Pokedex puts the average Gengar 1.5m from tail to tip – but it makes up for its tiny body with its huge tongue. There are over five feet of padding in the main body of the pillow, which can be unrolled for multiple (apparently) sleep-related purposes.
It is difficult to assess exactly what the plush is for. Last year, Bandai released an official Metapod sleeping bag, but it’s a lot harder to figure out where you’re supposed to rest your head when it comes to Gengar. Some promotional photos show a model compressing the tongue for use as a pillow, but others show the model resting its head in the Pokémon’s mouth, using the tongue stretched out as a very thin mattress, while others still suggest that the tongue can function as a blanket. I also have several questions as to why Bandai continues to position their bedding items as part of a business man’s work-at-home environment, but that’s another question.

It’s unclear if there will be a second wave of pre-orders or sales, or if the item will ever be shipped separately outside of Japan. As devastating as it can be, however, you can at least rest easy knowing the pillow is accurate enough for Pokemon games, thanks to Gengar’s ability to learn both Lick and Hypnosis.
