SANDWICH, England – Bryson DeChambeau’s game of golf is built around his well-documented weight gains and fitness coupled with relentless adjustments to his equipment.
Apparently the eight-time PGA Tour winner is not happy with the way things are going with the driver.
After hitting just four of 14 fairways on Thursday in the Open’s first round at Royal St. George’s, DeChambeau was innocently asked if he felt really good with his 1 over par 71 in that with a some improvement from the tee, his scores would get better.
“That’s what I said a few days ago; if I can hit him in the middle of the fairway that’s great, but with the driver right now the driver sucks,” he said. declared.
“That’s not a good face to me, and we’re still trying to figure out how to do it right on misfires. I live on a razor’s edge, like I’ve told people for a long time. takes it off the fairway, like in the first cut and so on, I catch the jumpers and I couldn’t control my wedges. ”
Ben Schomin, a tour operations director for Cobra who caddied for DeChambeau at the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago, took offense at the golfer’s comments.
“It’s really, really painful when he says something so stupid,” Schomin told Golfweek. “He’s never really been happy, ever. Like, it’s very rare when he’s happy.”
Schomin added: “I know if I corner him now and say, ‘Why the hell did you say that?’ he looks like he was crazy. He really didn’t mean to say it harshly. He knows how much everyone bends over backwards for him, but it’s still not cool. “
DeChambeau suggested that this has been happening for years, and that it’s not just an issue with the Cobra pilot he uses now – which he appears for in one of the company’s ad campaigns.
“This has been happening since 2016-17 when players stopped drawing him [hitting drives that curve to the left for a right-handed player]. There aren’t many golfers who draw it anymore. It’s not because of the turnover rate. Everybody thinks it’s – we’re at 2,000 [rpm], 1800 rotations or other. It’s not.
“It’s literally the physics and the way they build heads now. Unfortunately, it’s not the right design, and we’ve tried to fix it. [without the] results again. ”
“Everyone is looking for a quick fix,” Schomin told Golfweek. “Well, the magic ball gets harder to find the faster you swing and the smaller your loft gets.”
DeChambeau appeared to be in waist rough all day, but still managed to hit 11 greens in regulation. Of the last nine, he drove three straight holes to get under par, then bugged two of the next three, no doubt resulting in frustration – and his comments after the round.
The 2020 US Open winner lamented his inability to put the ball into short grass, which would make it easier for him to hit precise shots on the green – a difficult situation that all players face.
“It is quite capricious for me because it is a fairly short golf course [7,189 yards], and so when I hit the driver and it doesn’t go down the fairway, it’s first cut [of rough] or whatever it is, or it’s in the hay, it’s hard for me to take it out onto the green and control that, ”he said. “Like, once in the middle of the fairway like I was on 18, I was able to hit a nice shot at 11 feet and almost birdie.
