Fry’s Electronics, quirky retail chain, shutdown

Fry’s Electronics, well known for the extravagant themes in some of its stores, from Aztec to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, is closing its doors.

The benchmark channel for tech tinkerers looking for an obscure party said in an online post on Wednesday that the COVID-19 pandemic has made prosecution impossible.

“The company will implement the shutdown through an orderly liquidation process which it believes will be in the best interests of the company, its creditors and other stakeholders,” Fry’s said in a statement.

The statement continued, “The company ceased regular operations and began the liquidation process on February 24, 2021. It is hoped that liquidating through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liability, minimize the impact on our customers. , suppliers, owners and associates, and maximize the value of the company’s assets to its creditors and other stakeholders. “

The statement added, “The company is in the process of reaching out to its customers with repair and lockout vendors to help them understand what this will mean for them and the next steps proposed.”

The chain, founded 36 years ago, was focused on the West Coast, but had 31 stores in nine states.

Neil Saunders, Managing Director of GlobalData, called it “the end of an era and a sad day” for an army of loyal customers.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to post pictures and memories (good and bad).

The pandemic has taken a heavy toll on retailers, but Fry’s was already beaten by online competition and a battle between the big hitters Best Buy and Amazon.

The wild themes became more of a burden than an experience, Saunders said, and when the chain began to struggle, gaps began to appear on the shelves of cavernous stores, making them a shell of what they once were.

“Fry’s was truly a company created for the electronics boom of the ’80s. At that time, it was a gathering place for enthusiasts of an industry on fire,” Saunders said. “However, those days are long gone and now also has an icon representing them.”
