Fujifilm has announced a new pancake lens for the X-System: the XF 27mm f / 2.8 R WR lens. With its main feature being its compact size, the lens still promises high image quality despite its compressed design.

The 27mm f / 2.8 is one of Fujifilm’s thinnest and lightest lenses, measuring 2.44 inches (62mm) in diameter and only 23mm long at a weight of 3 ounces. (84 g).

The lens has an aperture ring with an f-stop scale so that you can visually check and adjust the aperture without having to use the viewfinder or camera screen, which is likely to to be appreciated by Fujifilm users. The aperture ring also features the A (Auto) position lock, which locks the lens in the A position to prevent unintentional aperture adjustments during use.

Despite its small size, the lens is still weather resistant. Fujifilm says weather resistance has been applied in seven places on the lens to protect it from water and dust and allow it to perform fully in temperatures as low as 14 ° F (-10 ° C).

A bit unusual for a crepe lens, the 27mm f / 2.8 comes with a dome-shaped lens hood and lens hood cap in addition to the standard lens cap.

The lens is made up of seven elements in five groups, including an aspherical element that Fujifilm says attenuates spherical aberration, field curvature, and distortion. As a result, the company promises “amazing image resolution” even at its wide aperture.

“Since the diameter of the image circle needed to cover an APS-C sensor (28.4mm) is so close to the focal length of XF 27mm f / 2.8,” the company writes. “The lens produces images of exceptional quality while enjoying an incredibly compact design.”

The XF27mm f / 2.8 R WR is expected to be available in March for $ 400.
