Fujifilm’s GFX 100S packs a massive 102-megapixel sensor into a compact body

Design-wise, the GFX 100S is different from all previous GFX cameras. It’s smaller, to begin with, with the weather-resistant body weighing just 900 grams or 1.9 pounds. It now has a large top screen instead of the shutter speed dial on the GFX 50S and a mode dial instead of an ISO dial. All of these things are set using the front and rear dials instead, with the top screen providing a dial-shaped view of the settings. The AF joystick is also new.

With the company’s latest X processor, it can shoot at up to 5 fps, which is impressive considering the huge frame sizes. It will also be easier to keep those photos sharp in low light conditions, thanks to the built-in 5-axis stabilization that can reduce shaking by 6 stops.

The new processors also allow it to focus as fast as 0.16 seconds in very low light down to -5.5 EV. This is facilitated by phase detection pixels which cover almost 100% of the image. It also includes continuous AF tracking and face / eye detection, ideal for the kind of portrait work a camera like this is designed for.

If you want to record 4K videos with a cinematic shallow depth of field, the GFX 100S is Fujifilm’s most capable large-sensor camera to date. You can shoot in 4K up to 30 fps using 10-bit F-log 4: 2: 0 recording internally, or output as 10-bit 4: 2: 2 F-Log or 12-bit RAW to an external recorder. However, 1080p slow motion is limited to 60 fps. Files can be recorded in Long Gop (200 Mbps) or All Intra up to 400 Mbps.

The GFX 100S has the same battery as the X-T4, but can deliver up to 460 shots on a charge, Fujifilm said. However, it is not available with a battery grip like the GFX 50S. Other features include a 3.69 million dot color OLED viewfinder with 100% coverage, two UHS-II SD card slots, micro-HDMI, microphone, headset and USB-C 3.2 ports and a tilting touchscreen three-way 2.36 million points.

With the GFX 100S, Fujifilm has taken a big step forward in making its large format cameras more modern, but it doesn’t come cheap. It will arrive in March 2021 for $ 6,000 for the body alone. Fujifilm also unveiled the GF80mm f / 1.7 lens, an extremely fast lens that will create “beautifully smooth bokeh,” according to Fujifilm. It also arrives in March for $ 2,300.
