One could consider that the poorest relationship with the giant of EA FIFA series but PES has developed its own impressive reputation in recent years. The unique gameplay of the series has been repeatedly praised for its simulation-based qualities, while its graphics and number of official licenses have improved dramatically over time.
The latest version of the franchise – eFootball PES 2020 – brings all this to a higher level, allowing a more mature and authentic reproduction of the sport. And even though there are still complaints for the long-time veterans of the series, the current football is better than ever, making PES 2020 a key consideration for PES and FIFA fans as well.

The online servers of the game being unavailable before the release of the game, we postpone our final verdict on Thursday, September 12th. For the moment, here are our impressions of the current revision of the offline part of eFootball PES 2020.
PES 2020 new features
eFootball PES 2020 is different from last year's game by incorporating a variety of new features in the field, including new animations and improved playability balance. The result is a game that feels grounded in reality, challenging you to play authentic football without resorting to hasty attacks or unrealistic maneuvers.
Take the passes, for example. There is an improved accuracy system in the game with respect to foot fouls, and it works by punishing unintelligent passes and shots. Attempting to turn quickly on the spot passing a teammate will often see the ball turn in the wrong direction, which will require you to think more carefully about how you build your attacks and your scoring chances.
The ball also acts in a more contextual way this year, turning and deflecting authentically. This, combined with a range of new player animations, allows for more experimental attack opportunities. You can get more curves on your passes, more lashes on your centers and finally score incredible goals. All in all, this encourages you to be creative to go forward.
An occasional lack of responsiveness can still be attributed to the AI, as players sometimes fail to intercept passes or head to the ball in obvious situations. That said, these cases are far less common than in the game demo, and the AI's behavior is impressive. It serves to improve PES 2020Authentic and very engaging gameplay.
PES 2020 licensing
The big news in terms of team licensing this year is the exclusive addition of Juventus. The game does a great job with the giants of the Serie A by implementing an amazing replica of their Allianz stadium, as well as updated player models and face scans. You even get the benefit / horror (delete as you see fit) from their Chelsea Dagger goal music when you score.
Other major new licenses include Manchester United and Bayern Munich, which means that Old Trafford and the Allianz Arena are available. As you can imagine, these arenas have an exceptional appearance in the game and are accompanied by incredible aerial shots and / or unique tunnel cinematics. Their interiors are enhanced by some notable improvements in lighting and turf.
Unfortunately, the audio aspects of the presentation are less impressive. The biggest culprit is the English commentary, which remains repetitive and dated, with tired sentences such as "there is still time to move", causing moans. On the other hand, some of the crowd chants are effective in generating a unique atmosphere (especially in South America), but outdated advertisers absolutely need a tune-up.
A notable improvement is the addition of a new camera angle by default. It offers a more realistic and realistic view of the height than the old 'Dynamic Wide', and adapts intelligently to various situations, zooming in and out as needed. Once you get used to it, it changes the game, it offers a much broader view of the field and greatly increases the sense of immersion.
PES 2020 Master League
The majority of eFootball PES 2020The offline modes remain largely intact, with the main exception of Master League. The popular management mode of the series has stalled in recent years, having received few major improvements, but has undergone various changes this time around.
By far, the biggest novelty is the addition of detailed cutting scenes. These come back periodically in all areas, from press conferences to derby days; some are interactive and offer multiple choice answers. For example, your responses may affect your seasonal goals and some decisions may affect player morale, but unfortunately many of these scenes simply act as a facade and have little long-term impact.
That said, they still do a welcome job of refreshing the diet. Master League also includes some other nice new features this year, such as a more attractive main menu and customizable sponsor logos. In addition, it incorporates more realistic transfer values, while improved customization options allow you to tinker with items such as financial budgets and difficulty levels.
As a bonus, you can even support various caption managers. People such as Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff can be selected as avatars in the game and occupy a prominent place in cinematics. The trade-off for this is an inability to create your own custom manager – apparently a restriction of the new kinematic system – with only a relatively small selection of predefined templates available at launch.
Online Features of PES 2020
In addition to the usual suspects such as divisions and cooperatives, this year there is a brand new online mode called Matchday. This takes the form of a tournament, requiring you to join one of the two teams (eg, home or away) and play games to earn points to your team . At the end of a four-hour window, a representative from each side is chosen to participate in a grand finale.
This is a pretty nice mode (especially if you're a fan of myClub), with its motto, its parts and GP scouts distributed as and when. The big problem with Matchday, however, is how to limit that proves. The times in which you can play the mode are limited to a tight period, and are only suitable for those who have a lot of free time.
In the case of myClub, things happen normally. There are not too many additions to talk about minor external changes to the interface, as well as the possibility of getting exclusive kits. Nevertheless, it remains an attractive mode offering a reasonable number of ways to play – although it would be nice to see more options for offline players next year.
When you venture online, you always experience setbacks. This is more likely to happen in some tournament and cooperative matches when you can not filter your opponents. However, for the rest of the online features, you can now identify player login ratings, which can help limit potential problems and improve your chances of having a good experience.
Complete verdict
In all, eFootball PES 2020 provides a smarter and more authentic version of the sport than previous entries. Various gameplay enhancements create a more realistic football brand with creative potential, while a range of new licenses and major visual enhancements add to the appeal.
Some problems still need to be solved, such as obsolete features and an occasional lack of responsiveness to AI, but otherwise Konami's latest efforts will please you, especially for purists passionate about the beautiful game.
