Severe weather caused extensive storm damage in the town of Fultondale on Monday evening.
Fultondale Police Chief DP Smith said there were downed trees and overturned cars in the areas of Walker Chapel, Indian Valley Road and Carson Road.
It is not known at this point if there were any injuries.
Dave Moerbe, senior pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gardendale and his son, Sam, 18, rushed to their old neighborhood of Fultondale when they learned of the devastation there.
The neighborhood – Georgetown Lane – is close to Black Creek Park.
The Moerbe family lived there until about a year ago.
“Looks like a bomb went off,” Sam said.
He said about 80% of the houses in the neighborhood had damaged roofs and about 20% of them collapsed.
All the trees in Black Creek Park were knocked down, father and son said, and cars were moved if not knocked over.
“It’s just devastating,” said Dave Moerbe.
“There are 45 houses in this community and all of them are damaged. … Debris is everywhere, ” he said. “We pulled a lady out the back window because she couldn’t get out.
The Birmingham National Weather Service said a confirmed tornado was heading from Fultondale towards the Center Point area.
According to the Jefferson County EMA, there is storm damage on the ground stretching from Fultondale to Center Point.
The NWS urged Alabamians to have a way to receive weather alerts at night.
