Future of the Judgment series unclear as lead actor’s agency reportedly disrupts SEGA’s plans

Judgment Future Series

Lost Judgment may not be out for a few months, but there is already speculation about the future of the SEGA series. This is all coming from Japanese showbiz site Nikkan Taishu, which reports that lead actor Takuya Kimura’s talent agency is emerging as a hindrance.

Kimura plays the protagonist Takayuki Yagami in the Judgment games – a private investigator who shares the actor’s face as well as his voice. Kimura has been an immensely popular figure in Japan for decades, appearing in all manner of TV shows and movies. As such, it’s hardly surprising to hear that her art agency is particularly protective.

So what’s the real problem here? Well, apparently the agency doesn’t want Kimura to appear in PC games. Everything is a bit vague, but it is suggested that because PCs have internet access, Kimura’s image is more at risk. It’s possible that the customizable nature of PC gaming is the real issue. For example, if the Judgment games were released on PC, modders could take character models and reuse them. In short, this is all a bit crazy.

And that, of course, means that SEGA has a problem, since the publisher has invested more and more in porting its titles to PC (with great success, it should be added). Judgment hasn’t been released on PC yet, and Lost Judgment is only coming to consoles.

Is there a Judgment series without Kimura? Hard to say. He’s clearly the face of the franchise, but we’re guessing that at least in part depends on how Lost Judgment sells. We’re sure that, if pushed, SEGA could do things differently, but maybe the two sides can come to some sort of agreement before more drastic measures are considered.

Nothing like a little showbiz drama, eh?
