Future Pixel Phones Won’t Get Unlimited Google Photos

[ad_1]

Yesterday’s news of Google Photos losing free unlimited storage was a bummer, but good news for Google Pixel owners was that they wouldn’t lose that advantage. Unfortunately, future Pixels won’t have the same luxury.

As we explained yesterday, Google has confirmed that Pixel 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 devices will all keep Google Photos free storage in the future. This is in part because some of these devices have lifetime warranties for free storage, which is often used in the marketing of these devices. Google explains in more detail on a support page:

If you have a Pixel 5 or earlier device, your current backup quality options and benefits remain unchanged. High quality uploads from your Pixel 2-5 devices will continue to enjoy unlimited free storage. However, photos and videos saved from other devices in high quality after June 1, 2021 will start counting towards your Google Account storage.

This is not something you will hear in the future, however. Android Central advises that future Google Pixel smartphones will not be able to benefit from unlimited photo storage for photos and videos. Instead, they’ll end up pulling out of the same free 15GB or paid 100GB + jars as every other smartphone.

Really, it’s a bit surprising. It would have been easy to assume that Google would retain this advantage to get people to buy Pixel smartphones. After all, the unlimited free storage is a huge selling point, especially on a service as good as Google Photos.
