Missing Long Island woman Gabby Petito and her boyfriend got into a scuffle near a Utah national park last month, telling police the tension between the two “had increased in the past few days.” , according to police records.
Petito also told cops that she was concerned that her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, would drive away and leave her behind “without a car.”
Police say they looked into domestic violence charges against Petito, who was “struggling with his sanity” and allegedly scratched Laundrie.
But police determined the situation was not a criminal matter “as much as a mental health crisis” and told the conflicting couple to spend the night separately.
“The man and woman said they were in love and engaged to get married and were desperate to see anyone charged with a crime,” the report, obtained by The Post, said.
Petito, 22, and Laundrie, 23, told cops in Moab, Utah, during the Aug. 12 incident that they had been traveling together for months and that “emotional tension between them” had led to an “increased number of disputes”. says the report.
Police first responded to a report of domestic disturbance at around 4:30 p.m. near the Moonflower Community Co-op in Moab, then arrested the 2012 Ford Transit van in which the two were traveling.
“I approached the vehicle and saw that the only occupants were Gabrielle and Brian,” wrote Constable Daniel Scott Robbins. “Gabrielle, who was in the east passenger, was crying uncontrollably.”
Petito and Laundrie told the cops they both suffered from an undisclosed disorder, Laundrie telling the officer “neither he nor Gabrielle are taking any medication.”
The specific disorder was redacted from the police report.
According to the report, the couple got into an argument near a local convenience store and Petito attempted to slap Laundrie, who locked her out of the van.
“Brian said Gabrielle, thinking he was going to leave her in Moab without a ride, went to slap him,” the report said. “As Gabrielle started to sway, Brian pushed her back to avoid the slap. As a result, Gabrielle, unbalanced, still grabbed Brian’s face with a few fingers, causing visible minor scratches.
But neither wanted to press charges, and the police said they “then determined that the most appropriate course of action would be to help separate the parties for the night so that they could reset their mental states without interference from each other “.
Officers found a hotel room for the overnight laundry and Petito stayed in the van.
The 22-year-old Long Island native was last heard from late last month and was reported missing by her mother on September 11.
Laundrie returned home with the van on September 1 without Petito and has since refused to cooperate with authorities.
Petito’s mother Nichole Schmidt – who twice begged Laundrie to reveal what happened – reported his disappearance on Saturday and police seized the van.
