Long Island native Gabby Petito’s disappearance is unrelated to the double murder of a newlywed couple at a Utah campsite, cops said Friday.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has poured cold water on the possibility that the murders outside of Moab could be linked to the missing persons case in a one-sentence statement.
“It has been determined that the case of Gabby Petito’s missing person is unrelated to the double homicide case involving Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte,” Sheriff Steven White wrote.
Police had been investigating a possible connection for several days, and on Thursday an attorney for Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie, who remains silent on his possible whereabouts, released a bizarre statement about the need to investigate a possible link. .
Police were called over a marital dispute between Petito, 22, and Laundrie, 23, at the workplace of one of the murder victims, Kylen Schulte, 24, on August 12. No charges have been laid.
A day later, Schulte and his wife Crystal Turner, 38, were seen at a bar in Moab talking to friends of a creepy guy who was staying at their campsite, officials said. It was the last time they were seen alive.
The couple’s partially undressed bodies were found on August 18 with gunshot wounds to the back, sides and chest.
Petito was last seen in Wyoming on August 30 as she was traveling the country with Laundrie in her white van.
Laundrie returned to his parents’ house in Florida in the van, without his girlfriend.
He refused to speak about this matter to the police or to Petito’s desperate family.
Police were seen visiting Laundrie’s home on Friday evening, but cops said they were not there to question the tight-lipped boyfriend, who was not named a suspect.
“North Port Police are currently speaking with the Laundrie family at their request. At the moment, we are not speaking with Brian. More details when they become available, ” the North Port Police Department tweeted.
