Gabby Petito’s homicide will be difficult to link to perpetrator, medical examiner says

Forensic pathologist Priya Banerjee recapitulated the findings of the autopsy performed on Gabby Petito, 22, whose death was deemed a homicide.

Banerjee joined “Fox & Friends First” on Wednesday, saying officials are unlikely to disclose the cause of death yet to avoid hampering the ongoing investigation.

“The challenge obviously was for my colleagues to determine the cause of death, to perform the autopsy, and my professional feeling is that they are not yet going to reveal the cause of death with an ongoing investigation,” Banerjee said.

The autopsy revealed that Petito had died in homicide, but did not specify how she was killed.

“This is very preliminary in my opinion, but it is very important to unveil the mode of death, which as you said is homicide, because it tells us that she did not die a natural death. .

“It was due to someone’s actions which cost him his life.”

Petito’s body was discovered in Wyoming over the weekend, and an autopsy performed on Tuesday confirmed the human remains were in fact Petito.

“It’s a challenge, to tie the perpetrator to the crime, in particular, I mean, as part of the decomposition, it was in nature, high temperature fluctuation,” Banerjee said, adding that he didn’t Wouldn’t be surprising if the DNA of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, was present since the two were in a relationship.

“So it will be a challenge, I think, to tie it all together.”

Banerjee said it’s important to consider all of the possibilities of Petito’s death to successfully determine how she was killed.

“You really have to rule out asphyxiation or neck strangulation, make sure there is no blunt trauma to the head or other parts of the body,” Banerjee said.

“So really a lot of potential ways she could have been killed.”

“It’s not a one-way street,” she continued. “Sometimes a combination is you really have to go and cast a wide net and look for those injuries.”

Laundrie, who is the only person of interest in the case, is missing as the investigation continues.
