The play began: “In 2013, before our marriage, Dwyane had a baby with another woman. It goes without saying that we were not well when this child was conceived.

Gabi and Dwyane started dating in 2008, but according to the athlete’s own 2020 documentary, the couple were on hiatus when he and his ‘longtime friend’ Aja Metoyer conceived Xavier, now seven.

At the time, Wade was already a father to Zaire, 18, and Zaya, 12, and was the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon, 18.

Although the couple “are much better” when they revealed their secret to her, she was heartbroken.

“To say I was devastated is to pick a word off a low shelf for convenience,” the actress explained. “There are people – strangers I will never meet – who were upset that I hadn’t talked about this trauma before. I haven’t had any words, and even after countless amounts of therapy I’m not sure I have them now. ‘

Gabi was especially hurt given how hard she was trying to have a baby with Dwyane.

“Dwyane’s experience having a baby so easily – when I was unable to – left my soul not only shattered to pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattered in the wind,” she wrote .

“We put together what we could to slowly transform myself into something new. There was no way to hide the spot where I had been glued.

Although the couple are ready to pick up the pieces, Union admitted that their ‘the feelings weren’t coming from a healthy place, ”in large part because of her own difficulties getting pregnant.

“A lot of what made the decision so difficult was that if I didn’t go through surrogacy, then I was convinced I had to let Dwyane go,” she confessed. “Even if he didn’t want to, I had to let him find someone who could give him what he wanted.”

After some thought, Union began to research surrogacy options.

She and Wade married in 2014 and would welcome their daughter Kaavia four years later.

Dwyane previously admitted that telling Gabrielle about Xavier was the “hardest thing” he “ever had to do.”

“I had a child with someone else and had to tell him. The hardest thing I have ever had to do is stand up and tell Gabrielle Union that I had a child with someone else, ”he said in his documentary D. Wade: Life Unexpected. ‘I was unable to sleep. I was not eating.

“When you got something that you know is going to come out and you have that information and you know it’s going to screw up the life of someone you care about, love, if it doesn’t hurt you, so you’re not human, Wade continued. “… Me and Gab just went through something you never want to go through and we came out of it anyway.”

While Zaire and Zaya often make appearances, Xavier’s presence seems to be more private.
