Foldable smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Fold point to a promising future for the mobile world. But that does not mean you should follow the movement now.

Samsung finally offers a longer and deeper look at the Galaxy Fold, a smartphone that unfolds like a book to reveal a second larger screen. It's the magic of science fiction that opens the door to a whole new world of different designs and devices.

The Galaxy Fold is perhaps impressive, but there may not be a better illustration of the risks of being an early adopter. The credit goes to Samsung for putting a foldable phone on the market before its competitors, but it is clear from our brief overview of the device that development and development need to be further developed before being ready for the average consumer . After all, the gadget was shown on stage for a few minutes and was not available for the demos despite unpacked to be the launch event of the phone.

"The Galaxy Fold is not meant to be a mass product, at least not yet," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Techsponential. "This is a halo product for Samsung, aimed at early users."

Indeed, fans of Samsung and gadgets will gladly align to be the first to own this device. They will be beta testers in this brand new collapsible adventure.

Samsung knows it, that's why it is safer Galaxy S10 line, alongside Plus, 5G and Budget variants, served as meat at Unzipped event. For most consumers, these devices will be more than enough for their needs.

But if you think of the Galaxy Fold, here are some reasons why you should reconsider your decision.

Price

You think the starting price of $ 1099 from the iPhone XS Max is expensive? The Galaxy Fold will be launched on April 26 at $ 1,980.

Beside the Fold, the Galaxy S10 at $ 899 and the largest at $ 999, the Galaxy S10 Plus are virtually bargains. Although they are decidedly more rigid.

At a time when smartphone prices are higher than ever before, the Galaxy Fold is breaking new ground in terms of its consumer potential.

Justin Denison, director of marketing at Samsung, said: "This is a unique luxury device of its kind."

User interface

Samsung said it had to rethink the software and the user interface to take advantage of both screens. It is admirable that the company has taken care to consider the new design, but Samsung has mixed results in software.

The Galaxy Fold works well with Google Maps.

The debut of Touch Wiz has been catastrophic and, although Samsung's experience has been considerable, it still lacks the cleaner interfaces found on competing devices such as Google Pixel phones or OnePlus devices.

What Samsung showed on Wednesday seemed promising. The device will be able to run three applications at a time and the continuous flow between the smaller screen and the bigger one will work well in the demos. But we will not know until we get our hands on the gadget.

Given the niche of this device, application support should be catastrophic at first. Google said it would support foldable devices with its next Android update, but that will not happen until the second half of the year. For now, Samsung has introduced Google Maps and the video of Netflix as examples of applications operating a larger screen.

Drums

We will not know how long the Galaxy Fold's battery will last until we have done the proper tests, but the requirements of not one, but two screens – including a massive folding screen – do not bode well for the Galaxy Fold .

Samsung seems to know this, and he touted the inclusion of two separate batteries that power the device.

Cut

The disadvantage of a foldable phone is, well, it bends. Two halves mean a device that is thicker than even the largest of smartphones. This comes at a time when phone makers are shaving millimeters of their devices and talking about a sleek design.

The Galaxy Fold seems to be less bulky than the prototype introduced by Samsung in November, but it is still twice as thick as your standard phone.

So wait until you try to stuff it into the side pocket of your skinny jeans.

The Galaxy Fold is available in four colors.

Durability

This one is the real factor x. Samsung has touted the exclusive articulated spine, as well as the coating on the glass that protects the foldable part from damage from wear. But even though Samsung has tested these phones, their durability is uncertain.

I wish you also good luck if you have scratched or cracked the screen. You will not be able to bring this to a screen repair shop for repair.

The Galaxy Fold has a massive screen of 7.3 inches.

Foldable pioneers

If you are the type of person who needs to have the latest and the best whatever it is – well, why do you even read this story? Concerns such as price and battery life are probably not too critical, as it is probably not your only phone.

"It will sell and become a status symbol," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insight.

So, to those first users willing to brave the new world of foldable phones, ultimately leading to more polite products for the rest of us, I salute you.

But for now, I'm going to stick to my boring rectangular block of glass and metal.
